1 Chronicles 22:13

1 Chronicles 22:13
Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.

My Notes

What Does 1 Chronicles 22:13 Mean?

David is speaking to his son Solomon, preparing him for the enormous task of building the temple. His charge echoes Moses' words to Joshua: "be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed." The repetition across generations—Moses to Joshua, David to Solomon—creates a pattern of leadership transition rooted in the same divine encouragement.

The conditional structure is important: "Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgments." Prosperity is linked directly to obedience. This isn't prosperity gospel in the modern sense—it's a covenant promise specific to Israel's kings. Their success in leading God's people depended on their adherence to God's law. The statutes and judgments "which the LORD charged Moses with" ground Solomon's future kingdom in the foundation laid at Sinai.

David's four imperatives—be strong, be courageous, don't dread, don't be dismayed—address both the external challenge (strength and courage for the task) and the internal threat (fear and discouragement that could paralyze). David knew from decades of experience that the inner battle was often harder than the outer one. He was giving Solomon not just practical advice but emotional and spiritual preparation for leadership.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What task or calling in your life feels too big right now? How does David's charge speak to that specific situation?
  • 2.David said prosperity follows obedience. How do you understand that promise—not as a guarantee of wealth, but as something deeper?
  • 3.Which of David's four commands speaks most to where you are right now: be strong, be courageous, don't dread, or don't be dismayed?
  • 4.Who in your life has spoken this kind of charge over you—words that armed you for something difficult ahead? If no one has, who do you wish would?

Devotional

David's charge to Solomon is the kind of thing a father says when he knows he won't be there to help. Be strong. Be courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't lose heart. These aren't casual encouragements—they're the words of a man who fought giants, fled kings, buried children, and led a nation. David knew exactly what was ahead for Solomon, and he distilled everything into this: obey God, and don't let fear stop you.

The order matters. David doesn't start with "don't be afraid." He starts with obedience: "if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes." Courage flows from obedience, not the other way around. When you know you're walking in God's will, fear loses its authority over you. Not because you stop feeling it, but because it no longer has the final word.

If you're facing something that feels too big—a calling, a transition, a responsibility that seems beyond your capacity—David's words to Solomon are for you too. The God who charged Moses, who strengthened Joshua, who guided David, is the same God behind your assignment. You don't need to figure out how to be strong enough. You need to be faithful enough, and strength follows.

"Dread not, nor be dismayed." Four words that acknowledge something important: the task ahead might genuinely be frightening. David didn't dismiss Solomon's potential fear. He named it and told him not to give in to it. That's what courage actually is—not the absence of fear, but the refusal to let it make your decisions.
