“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
My Notes
What Does Deuteronomy 31:6 Mean?
Moses speaks these words to all of Israel just before his death. He knows he won't cross into the Promised Land. The people are about to face a new chapter without the leader who brought them out of Egypt. The fear is legitimate — they're about to fight established nations for territory.
The command echoes what God told Joshua (Joshua 1:9), but here it's spoken to the entire nation. Be strong. Be courageous. Don't be afraid. And then the reason: the LORD thy God goes with you. Not sends you. Goes with you.
"He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee" is a double negative that eliminates every possibility of abandonment. He won't fail — his power won't run short. He won't forsake — his presence won't leave. Both competence and companionship are guaranteed.
Moses is essentially giving a farewell speech. He won't be there for what comes next. But God will. The transfer of confidence isn't from Moses to Joshua — it's from Moses to God. The leader changes. The presence doesn't.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What transition or loss are you in right now where you need to hear 'he will not forsake thee'?
- 2.Moses gave this command to the whole community, not just the leaders. How does that affect how you receive it?
- 3.What's the difference between being strong in your own ability and being strong because God is with you?
- 4.Where have you experienced God's presence holding steady even when people or circumstances shifted around you?
Devotional
Moses is saying goodbye. He knows he's about to die, and the people he's led for forty years are about to face something new without him. Imagine the weight of that moment.
And what does he tell them? Not "you'll be fine" or "you're ready for this." He tells them who's going with them. The LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee.
There are seasons when the people and structures you've relied on shift. A mentor moves on. A friendship changes. A church, a community, a support system that held you up is no longer there in the same way. And you're left feeling exposed.
Moses' word to Israel is a word for those seasons: the person may leave, but God doesn't. He will not fail you. He will not forsake you. Those two promises cover everything — his capacity won't fall short, and his presence won't disappear.
Be strong and courageous. Not because you have it figured out. Not because the path ahead is clear. But because the one who walks with you has never once failed anyone who trusted him. That track record is your foundation.
