1 Chronicles 28:11

1 Chronicles 28:11
Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat,

My Notes

What Does 1 Chronicles 28:11 Mean?

David is handing Solomon the architectural blueprints for the temple — not just a general concept, but detailed plans for every component: the porch, the various chambers, the treasuries, the upper rooms, the inner rooms, and the place of the mercy seat. The Hebrew tavnit, translated "pattern," is the same word used for the pattern God showed Moses for the tabernacle (Exodus 25:9). This isn't David's design. It's God's design, given through David.

Verse 19 makes this explicit: "All this, said David, the LORD made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern." David received the temple plans the same way Moses received the tabernacle plans — by divine revelation. The architectural drawings came from God's hand. David was the draftsman, not the architect.

The intimacy of this transfer — father to son, king to heir, with God's blueprints in between — is one of the most tender scenes in David's story. He's giving Solomon everything he'll need: the plans, the materials (already gathered), the workforce (already organized), and the encouragement to begin. David can't build the temple himself — God said no. But he can prepare every single thing his son will need so that Solomon doesn't start from scratch. That's a particular kind of generosity: doing all the work you can for something you won't get to finish.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What are you building or preparing that someone else will get to finish or enjoy?
  • 2.How do you stay motivated to do excellent work on something you won't see completed?
  • 3.David received the plans from God but couldn't build the temple himself. Where has God given you a vision for something He hasn't given you permission to do — yet?
  • 4.What's the difference between legacy-building driven by ego and legacy-building driven by generosity? Which one describes your current posture?

Devotional

David spent years gathering gold, silver, bronze, cedar, and stone for a building he would never see completed. He received blueprints from God for a temple he would never set foot in. And he handed it all to his son without resentment, without conditions, without requiring his name on the cornerstone. That's legacy at its most selfless.

There's something profoundly challenging about doing serious, costly work for something someone else will finish. Your instinct is to want to see the result. To cut the ribbon. To stand in the building and say: I did this. David doesn't get that. He gets the preparation. He gets the blueprints and the stockpiled materials and the organized workforce. And then he dies. Solomon builds.

You may be in a season where you're preparing something you won't get to enjoy. Raising children whose impact you won't fully see. Building a ministry or a business that will bear fruit after you've moved on. Investing in a community that someone else will lead into its best season. David's example says: do it anyway. Gather the materials. Draw up the plans. Make it as complete as you can. Not because you'll get the credit, but because the building matters more than the builder. What are you preparing that someone else will complete?
