- 1 Chronicles
- Chapter 28
- Verse 9
“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.”
My Notes
What Does 1 Chronicles 28:9 Mean?
David speaks to his son Solomon with a charge that combines theology and urgency: know the God of your father and serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind. The knowledge is personal — not about God, but of God. The service flows from that knowledge.
"A perfect heart" does not mean sinless but whole — undivided, sincere, not double-minded. "A willing mind" means eager, voluntary service — not grudging obedience but desire-driven devotion.
"The LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts" — God sees beneath the surface. He evaluates not just actions but the thoughts that produce them. Nothing is hidden from his understanding.
"If thou seek him, he will be found of thee" is a conditional promise of profound simplicity. Seek God and you will find him. The seeking is the condition. The finding is the guarantee. But the reverse is also stated: forsake him and he will cast thee off for ever.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What is the difference between knowing about God and knowing God?
- 2.What does a 'perfect heart' — not flawless but undivided — look like in your life?
- 3.How does knowing God searches your thoughts change how you approach him?
- 4.Where in your life are you serving God with reluctance rather than willingness?
Devotional
Know thou the God of thy father. David does not say learn about God. He says know him. There is a difference between studying someone and knowing them. David wants Solomon to have the second kind.
Serve him with a perfect heart and a willing mind. Perfect — not flawless, but whole. Not split between competing loyalties. All in. And willing — not dragged into obedience but drawn into it by desire.
The LORD searcheth all hearts. You cannot fool God with performance. He does not just see what you do. He understands the imaginations of the thoughts — the deepest, most private movements of your mind. The thoughts you have not spoken. The intentions you have not acted on. He sees all of it.
If thou seek him, he will be found of thee. That is both a promise and a warning. The seeking produces the finding. But the reverse is true too — abandoning the search has consequences.
David knew both sides of this. He had sought God and been found. He had wandered and been corrected. Now he passes the most important thing he knows to his son: seek God. And do it wholeheartedly.
