My Notes
What Does 1 Corinthians 10:14 Mean?
"Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry." Paul commands: FLEE. Not 'resist.' Not 'manage.' Not 'be careful around.' FLEE — run, escape, put distance between yourself and idolatry as fast as possible. The command is preceded by 'my dearly beloved' (agapētoi mou — my beloved ones), making the urgent command AFFECTIONATE. The tone is: I love you — RUN. The tenderness doesn't soften the urgency. The urgency doesn't replace the tenderness.
The word "flee" (pheugete — keep fleeing, present imperative) means CONTINUOUS flight: the command isn't a one-time departure. It's ONGOING fleeing — a sustained, habitual, never-stopping running away from idolatry. The present tense makes it a LIFESTYLE, not an event. The fleeing is the daily practice. The running is the perpetual posture.
The "idolatry" (eidōlolatria — idol-worship, image-service) in the Corinthian context means participating in IDOL-FEAST meals (verse 7, 14-22): the Corinthians attended meals in pagan temples where food was offered to idols. Paul's command isn't about wooden statues in a museum. It's about PARTICIPATION in a system of worship that rivals Christ. The idolatry is relational, not just conceptual. The fleeing is from PARTICIPATION, not just from belief.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What idolatry are you being told to flee — and are you running or negotiating?
- 2.What does the command being both urgent (FLEE) and affectionate (my beloved) teach about loving correction?
- 3.How does fleeing being CONTINUOUS (present tense) describe the ongoing nature of the temptation?
- 4.What social participation constitutes 'idolatry' in your context — and what would fleeing cost?
Devotional
FLEE. From idolatry. Not resist. Not negotiate. Not gradually reduce. FLEE — run as fast and as far as you can. And the command comes wrapped in love: 'my dearly beloved.' The urgency is affectionate. The affection is urgent. I love you. Run.
The 'flee' is CONTINUOUS action: the present imperative (pheugete) means keep fleeing — don't stop. The fleeing isn't a one-time departure from a specific idol. It's a LIFESTYLE of running. The ongoing nature of the command means the temptation is ongoing. The idolatry doesn't stop pursuing. So the fleeing doesn't stop either. The running is the response to the constant attraction.
The 'my dearly beloved' wraps the urgent command in TENDERNESS: Paul doesn't bark an order at strangers. He addresses BELOVED people — agapētoi, people he LOVES. The love is the CONTEXT for the command. The fleeing is prescribed BY someone who loves TO people who are loved. The urgency comes from the affection. You flee because you're loved. You're warned because you're valued.
The 'idolatry' in Corinth is PARTICIPATION in rival worship: the Corinthians weren't bowing to statues in their living rooms. They were attending MEALS in pagan temples — social events where food was offered to idols, where the community gathered, where the social calendar happened. The idolatry is embedded in the SOCIAL LIFE. The fleeing means leaving the SOCIAL PARTICIPATION that involves the worship. The cost of fleeing is social. The cost of staying is spiritual.
What are you being told to FLEE from — and is the fleeing costing you socially while saving you spiritually?
