- 2 Corinthians
- Chapter 4
- Verse 2
“But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Corinthians 4:2 Mean?
Paul describes his ministry approach: he has renounced hidden things of dishonesty. He does not walk in craftiness. He does not handle the word of God deceitfully. Instead: by manifestation of the truth, commending himself to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
The negative list is specific: hidden dishonesty (operating with concealed motives), craftiness (clever manipulation), and deceitful handling of God's word (twisting Scripture to serve personal agendas). Paul rejects all three.
The positive alternative: manifestation of the truth. Not packaging the truth attractively. Not softening it for palatability. Manifesting it — making it visible, open, undisguised.
"Commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God" — the court of appeal is the human conscience and divine oversight. Paul is transparent enough that both the listener's conscience and God's judgment can evaluate him and find him honest.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'hidden things of dishonesty' exist in spiritual leadership today?
- 2.How do you distinguish between wise communication and 'craftiness'?
- 3.What does 'handling the word of God deceitfully' look like — how is Scripture misused to serve agendas?
- 4.Can your motives withstand examination by both human conscience and divine sight?
Devotional
We have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty. Paul starts with what he rejected: hidden agendas. Concealed motives. The kind of ministry that operates with one thing on the surface and another underneath.
Not walking in craftiness. Not manipulating people toward outcomes that serve the leader rather than the truth. Not being clever with how the message is delivered to get what you want.
Nor handling the word of God deceitfully. Not twisting Scripture. Not using the Bible as a tool for personal advantage. Not bending the text to say what serves your agenda rather than what it actually says.
But by manifestation of the truth. Instead of all that: truth. Visible. Open. Unpackaged. Not the truth made palatable or the truth made impressive. The truth, manifested.
Commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. Paul's ministry can be evaluated by anyone's conscience under God's gaze — and it holds up. There is nothing hidden. Nothing crafty. Nothing deceitful.
That is the standard for every person who handles God's word: transparency before human consciences and before God. Is your ministry — your life, your message, your motives — able to withstand that dual examination?
What are you hiding? What craftiness are you employing? What truth are you packaging to serve yourself? Renounce it. Manifest the truth. And let every conscience — and God — evaluate.
