- Chapter 2
- Verse 14
“Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Thessalonians 2:14 Mean?
Paul describes the Thessalonians' calling with two elements: called by "our gospel" (the specific message Paul preached) and called to "the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ." The calling has a means (the gospel) and a destination (Christ's glory). You're called through a message toward a person.
The phrase "our gospel" (to euangelion hemon) means the specific version of the gospel Paul delivered — not a different gospel from other apostles, but the gospel as Paul articulated it to the Thessalonians. The medium through which God called them was Paul's preaching. The divine call used a human voice.
The destination — "the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ" — means the calling doesn't terminate at salvation. It continues toward glory. You're not just called out of darkness; you're called into Christ's glory. The salvation is the beginning of the journey; the glory is the destination.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Does your understanding of salvation include 'obtaining the glory of Christ' — or does it stop at being rescued?
- 2.How does knowing the gospel is the mechanism of divine calling change how you view preaching and evangelism?
- 3.What does 'obtaining glory' mean practically — and how does it expand your view of your spiritual destination?
- 4.Where has your vision of salvation become too small — focused on rescue rather than glory?
Devotional
Called by the gospel. Called to glory. The starting point and the destination, both identified in one sentence. You were called through a specific message (Paul's preaching) toward a specific destiny (the glory of Jesus Christ).
The gospel isn't just information — it's the mechanism of calling. When Paul preached to the Thessalonians, God was calling through Paul's words. The human voice carried the divine summons. Every gospel presentation is potentially a calling event — God using a human mouth to summon someone toward Christ's glory.
"The obtaining of the glory" is the destination that most Christians undersell. We talk about being saved — rescued from sin, delivered from judgment, brought into relationship. All true. But Paul says the calling goes further: you're headed toward glory. Not just God's mercy. Not just heaven. The glory of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. You are being called into something magnificent.
The word "obtaining" (peripoiesis — acquisition, possession, gaining) means the glory is something you receive. Not earn, not create, not deserve — obtain. It's given to those who are called. The glory of Christ becomes the possession of those who respond to the gospel. You acquire what Christ possesses — not through achievement but through calling.
The next time the gospel feels small, remember the destination: glory. Not mediocre spiritual survival. Not bare-minimum salvation. The glory of Jesus Christ himself, obtained by those he called. That's where you're headed.
