- Verse 25
“Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began ,”
My Notes
What Does Romans 16:25 Mean?
Paul closes Romans with a doxology to the God who is able to establish the Roman believers. The establishing is according to Paul's gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ — the message and the person are inseparable.
"According to the revelation of the mystery" — the gospel Paul preaches was once hidden but is now revealed. The mystery that was kept secret since the world began has been made manifest.
"By the scriptures of the prophets" — the mystery is not disconnected from the Old Testament. It was hidden in the prophets and now made visible through Christ. The continuity between old and new is maintained.
"Made known to all nations for the obedience of faith" — the purpose of revealing the mystery is global: all nations. And the appropriate response is not just intellectual belief but the obedience of faith — faith that produces action.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the gospel 'establish' you — make you stable and grounded?
- 2.What does the 'mystery kept secret since the world began' mean for the privilege of living in this era?
- 3.How is 'the obedience of faith' different from either passive belief or legalistic works?
- 4.Why does Paul end the most theological letter in the Bible with worship?
Devotional
Now to him that is of power to stablish you. Paul closes the most theologically dense letter in the New Testament with a single focus: God has the power to make you stable. To establish you. To set you on ground that does not shift.
According to my gospel. The stabilizing power operates through the gospel — the message Paul has been unpacking for sixteen chapters. Every doctrine, every argument, every theological truth — all of it is meant to produce stability in you.
The revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began. The gospel is a revealed mystery — something hidden from the foundation of the world and now made known. You are living in the era of revelation. What was concealed for millennia has been unveiled in your lifetime.
Made known to all nations for the obedience of faith. The mystery was not revealed to stay in one culture. It was made known to all nations. And the response it demands is not passive belief. It is the obedience of faith — trust that acts.
To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. The letter that began with the gospel ends with glory. The theology that felt so complex circles back to worship. All the doctrine, all the argument, all the wrestling — it exists to produce one thing: glory to God.
Amen.
