Colossians 1:26

Colossians 1:26
Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

My Notes

What Does Colossians 1:26 Mean?

Colossians 1:26 announces the unveiling of something that was deliberately concealed for the entire span of human history — and is now, in Paul's generation, thrown open.

"Even the mystery" — the Greek to mystērion (the mystery, the secret, the hidden plan) is Paul's term for God's redemptive plan that existed from eternity but was not revealed until the appointed time. In Paul's usage, a "mystery" is not something permanently unknowable but something previously hidden that has now been disclosed. It's a secret with an expiration date.

"Which hath been hid from ages and from generations" — the Greek to apokekrymmenon apo tōn aiōnōn kai apo tōn geneōn (the thing having been hidden from the ages and from the generations) uses a perfect passive participle — the mystery was hidden (by God, deliberately) and remained hidden throughout all previous epochs and all previous generations. The "ages" (aiōnōn) represents cosmic time-periods. The "generations" (geneōn) represents human lifetimes. Every era, every generation that lived before this moment — they didn't have access to this.

"But now is made manifest to his saints" — the Greek nyni de ephanerōthē tois hagiois autou (but now it was made manifest/visible to his saints) marks the turning point. The Greek phaneroō (make manifest, make visible, reveal, disclose) means the hidden thing has been brought into the open. And the recipients are "his saints" — not an elite theological class, but all believers. The mystery that was hidden from every previous generation is now common knowledge among ordinary Christians.

Verse 27 identifies the mystery's content: "Christ in you, the hope of glory." The secret hidden since before time is this: God's plan was always to dwell inside His people — Gentiles included — through Christ. The indwelling of Christ in believers of every nation is what all of history was building toward and what no previous generation fully understood.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.The mystery was hidden for 'ages and generations' — then revealed. How does knowing you have access to something prophets couldn't see change how you value your faith?
  • 2.The mystery is 'Christ in you' — God indwelling ordinary believers. Do you live as if that's actually true? What would change if you took it more seriously?
  • 3.Paul says the mystery was hidden by God deliberately until the right time. What does that tell you about God's relationship with timing — and about things in your life that haven't been revealed yet?
  • 4.The recipients of the mystery are 'his saints' — not theological experts. How does the democratic nature of this reveal (given to all believers) challenge the idea that spiritual depth is only for the elite?

Devotional

Every generation that came before you lived without this information. Every prophet, every patriarch, every priest — they served God faithfully with the mystery still sealed. Hidden from ages. Hidden from generations. Concealed by God Himself, on purpose, until the time was right.

And now it's out. Made manifest. Not to an elite inner circle. To "his saints" — ordinary believers. You.

The mystery Paul is describing isn't a difficult doctrine. It's the most basic reality of Christian life: Christ in you, the hope of glory (v. 27). God living inside human beings — including Gentiles, including you — through the indwelling presence of Christ. That's what all of history was building toward. That's what Abraham didn't fully see, what Moses couldn't access, what David sensed but couldn't articulate.

The God who spoke from burning bushes, who dwelt in tabernacles and temples, who was always present but always separate — that God now lives inside people. The mystery isn't that God exists or that God loves. It's that God indwells. The barrier between divine and human has been permanently breached, from the inside.

You live on this side of the reveal. You have access to something that entire civilizations lived and died without knowing. And the appropriate response isn't to take it for granted — it's to be staggered by it. Prophets longed to see what you see (1 Peter 1:10-12). Angels desire to look into it. Generations upon generations lived in the hidden-mystery era. You live in the made-manifest era.

Christ in you. Not beside you. Not above you. Not watching from heaven. In you. That's the secret. And it's not a secret anymore.
