Colossians 1:25

Colossians 1:25
Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

My Notes

What Does Colossians 1:25 Mean?

Paul describes his ministry as a "dispensation" (oikonomia — stewardship, household management, administration) given to him by God for the Colossians' benefit. The purpose: "to fulfil the word of God" — to fully preach it, to complete the proclamation, to leave nothing unsaid.

The word "dispensation" means Paul sees himself as a household manager — not the owner. God owns the gospel. Paul manages it. He's been entrusted with a stewardship that requires faithful administration, not creative ownership. The message isn't his to change. It's his to deliver.

"To fulfil the word of God" (plēroō) means to fill up, to complete, to make full. Paul's calling isn't just to mention the gospel. It's to exhaust it — to preach it in its fullness, to leave no corner of its truth unexplored, to bring the word of God to its complete expression in every place he goes.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Are you treating what God has given you as a stewardship (to deliver faithfully) or as a possession (to use as you wish)?
  • 2.Where are you tempted to edit God's word — to deliver a partial message rather than the full one?
  • 3.How does the flow (God → you → others) change how you view the gifts and insights you've received?
  • 4.What would it look like to 'fulfil the word of God' in your context — to leave nothing unsaid?

Devotional

Paul is a manager, not an owner. The gospel was entrusted to him. His job is to deliver it fully.

"Dispensation" — oikonomia — is a household management term. The master owns the house. The steward manages it. Paul doesn't own the gospel. God gave it to him as a stewardship. A trust. A responsibility that requires faithfulness, not creativity. You don't redesign what the owner built. You manage it well.

"Given to me for you" — the stewardship has a direction. It's not for Paul. It's for the Colossians. Every gift Paul received, every revelation entrusted to him, every insight into the mystery of Christ — all of it was given to him so he could give it to them. The flow is: God → Paul → the church. Paul is the conduit, not the reservoir.

"To fulfil the word of God" — to fill it up. To make it complete. Not to preach a partial gospel. Not to share the easy parts and skip the hard ones. To bring the full word — every dimension, every implication, every truth — to the people it's aimed at.

This is what faithfulness looks like in ministry: you didn't create the message. You don't own the message. Your job is to deliver it — fully, completely, holding nothing back — to the people God aimed it at.

What has God entrusted to you? And are you delivering it fully? Or are you editing the word to make it more comfortable, more palatable, more manageable? Paul's stewardship required him to fulfil it. Not to customize it.
