2 Timothy 2:19

2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

My Notes

What Does 2 Timothy 2:19 Mean?

Paul offers Timothy assurance amid chaos: the foundation of God stands sure. Despite false teaching, despite people departing from the faith, despite confusion — God's foundation has not moved.

The foundation has a seal with two inscriptions: "The Lord knoweth them that are his" — God's knowledge is the basis for security. He knows who belongs to him. Your assurance does not rest on your grip but on his knowledge.

"Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity" — the second inscription is ethical. If you claim Christ's name, live like it. The seal is both doctrinal (God knows) and practical (you must act accordingly).

Paul writes this in a context of defection — people leaving the faith, spreading error, causing confusion. His anchor: God's foundation stands. People waver. The foundation does not.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What shaking in your world right now do you need to set against the sure foundation of God?
  • 2.How does 'the Lord knoweth them that are his' provide security when you cannot see clearly?
  • 3.What does 'departing from iniquity' look like as a response to claiming Christ's name?
  • 4.How do the two inscriptions — God's knowledge and your obedience — work together?

Devotional

The foundation of God standeth sure. People leave the faith. Teachers spread lies. The church seems to fracture. And underneath all of it — unshaken, immovable — the foundation of God stands sure.

The Lord knoweth them that are his. First seal. When everything is confusing — when you cannot tell who is genuine and who is false — God knows. His knowledge is not fooled by performance or undermined by doubt. He knows who belongs to him.

Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. Second seal. The foundation is not just doctrinal. It is ethical. If you claim the name, live the life. Naming Christ and practicing sin is a contradiction the foundation does not support.

This verse is for seasons of confusion — when the ground seems to shake, when trusted leaders fall, when the church feels unstable. Paul says: the foundation has not moved. God's knowledge has not failed. And the seal is still on the stone.

Whatever is shaking around you right now — relationships, institutions, your own confidence — the foundation of God standeth sure. Stand on it.
