1 Corinthians 8:3

1 Corinthians 8:3
But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

My Notes

What Does 1 Corinthians 8:3 Mean?

The Corinthians were debating whether Christians could eat food that had been sacrificed to idols. Some had strong theological knowledge — they knew idols were nothing — and felt free to eat. Paul acknowledges their knowledge but then flips the script: "But if any man love God, the same is known of him."

The shift from knowing to being known is one of Paul's most profound theological moves. The Corinthians were proud of their knowledge about God. Paul redirects: what matters isn't what you know about God. It's that God knows you. The relationship isn't defined by your intellectual grasp of truth. It's defined by God's recognition of you.

"The same is known of him" — of God. God's knowing is active and relational. It's not that God has information about you. He knows you the way a parent knows a child — intimately, possessively, with investment. And the doorway to being known by God? Love. Not knowledge. Love.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Where in your faith life have you prioritized knowing about God over loving God — and what was the result?
  • 2.What does it mean to you that the most important thing isn't your knowledge of God but God's knowledge of you?
  • 3.Have you ever used theological knowledge as a way to feel superior to others — even subtly?
  • 4.How does the idea of 'being known by God' feel different from 'knowing God'? Which feels more real to you?

Devotional

Knowledge puffs up. Love builds up. Paul said it in verse 1, and now he shows what he means.

The Corinthians who knew idols were nothing weren't wrong — Paul agrees with their theology. But they were using their knowledge as a status marker, looking down on weaker believers who were still afraid of idol meat. Their knowledge was correct and their posture was toxic.

So Paul pivots to the only thing that actually matters: do you love God? Because if you do, the important thing isn't what you know — it's that you are known. By Him. Personally. Relationally.

This is liberating if you've ever felt like you don't know enough theology, enough doctrine, enough Bible. The measure of your spiritual maturity isn't your knowledge base. It's your love. And the stunning thing Paul says is that loving God doesn't earn His recognition — it reveals it. If you love Him, it's because He already knew you first.

You are known before you are knowledgeable. Let that settle.
