2 Timothy 4:17

2 Timothy 4:17
Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

My Notes

What Does 2 Timothy 4:17 Mean?

Paul writes from prison — likely his final imprisonment before execution — and testifies that the Lord stood with him and strengthened him. Not removed the chains. Stood with him in them.

The purpose of the strengthening: that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Even in chains, Paul's mission continued. The imprisonment did not stop the gospel. It amplified it.

"I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion" — Paul experienced rescue from immediate danger. The lion may be literal (Roman arena) or figurative (Satan, or a powerful enemy). Either way, God delivered.

The verse captures the pattern of Paul's entire life: abandoned by people, sustained by God. Others left him (4:16). The Lord stood with him. Human support failed. Divine presence held.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.When has the Lord 'stood with you' after others left?
  • 2.How can imprisonment or difficulty become a platform for God's purposes?
  • 3.What does 'delivered out of the mouth of the lion' look like in your experience?
  • 4.Where do you need God to stand with you and strengthen you right now?

Devotional

Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me. Everyone else may have left. But the Lord stood. Present tense. Right there. In the prison cell. In the trial. In the moment when human support evaporated.

And strengthened me. Not just kept me company. Gave me strength — the kind that enabled him to keep preaching even in chains. The imprisonment did not silence Paul. It gave the gospel a new platform.

That by me the preaching might be fully known. God's strategy for getting the gospel to all the Gentiles involved a man in chains. The prison was not a detour from the mission. It was the mission's next chapter.

I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. After the strengthening, the deliverance. Not before. The strength came first. The rescue came after. God did not spare Paul from the lion's mouth. He delivered him from inside it.

If you are alone right now — if the people you counted on have stepped away — Paul's testimony is for you. The Lord stood with me. When everyone else sits down, he stands up. And the strength he gives is enough for whatever is coming.
