Acts 10:43

Acts 10:43
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

My Notes

What Does Acts 10:43 Mean?

Peter is preaching to Cornelius's household — the first Gentile audience in Acts — and he summarizes the gospel with a sweep that covers all the prophets and all the people. "To him give all the prophets witness" — not some prophets. All of them. Every prophetic voice in Israel's history pointed to Jesus. The law, the psalms, the major prophets, the minor prophets — all of them, collectively, gave witness (marturousin, present tense: they're still testifying) to this one person.

"That through his name" — the mechanism of salvation is the name. Not through ritual, not through law-keeping, not through ethnic identity. Through His name — the authority, identity, and power of Jesus.

"Whosoever believeth in him" — the scope is unlimited. Whosoever (pas ho pisteuon) — every person who believes. No ethnic qualifier. No gender qualifier. No social qualifier. Whosoever. Peter is standing in a Gentile house, saying what would have been unthinkable to him months earlier: the promise is for everyone.

"Shall receive remission of sins" — aphesis hamartion. Release from sins. Forgiveness. The slate wiped clean. The word aphesis means to send away, to release, to let go. The sins are sent away — not managed, not reduced, not gradually improved. Released. And the mechanism is belief in His name.

The verse is the gospel in one sentence: all the prophets, one name, whosoever believes, complete forgiveness.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.All the prophets witnessed to Jesus. How does the unity of Scripture's testimony strengthen your confidence in who He is?
  • 2.The forgiveness is through 'his name' — not your effort. Where are you still trying to earn what the name already provides?
  • 3.'Whosoever' — without qualifier. Have you fully accepted that you're included, or does something in you still feel disqualified?
  • 4.Peter preached this to Gentiles — outsiders. Who are the 'outsiders' in your world who need to hear that 'whosoever' includes them?

Devotional

All the prophets. One name. Whosoever believes. Total forgiveness. That's the gospel in a single sentence.

Peter is standing in a Roman soldier's living room — a place no Jewish leader would have set foot in a month earlier — and he's summarizing everything the Bible has been saying from Genesis to Malachi. Every prophet. Every voice God ever sent to Israel. They all pointed here: to a name. To Jesus. And what that name offers isn't partial improvement. It's remission — aphesis, the sending away of sins. Complete. Final. Done.

"All the prophets witness." Peter doesn't say some prophets hinted at it. He says all of them testified — actively, collectively, across centuries. Moses witnessed. Isaiah witnessed. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, the twelve minor prophets — every one of them, in their own language and their own era, pointed to the same person. The unity of the testimony is the argument. When every witness says the same thing, the testimony is compelling.

"Whosoever believeth in him." This is the word that blows the doors off the gospel. Whosoever. Standing in a Gentile house, Peter says the word that makes the promise universal. Not "every Jew who believes." Not "every circumcised person who believes." Whosoever. The forgiveness that flows from Jesus' name doesn't check your passport, your bloodline, or your résumé. It checks your belief.

If you've ever felt disqualified — too sinful, too far, too late, too different, too outside — "whosoever" is the word that opens the door. All the prophets pointed to Him. His name carries the authority. And the forgiveness is for anyone who believes. Anyone. That includes you.
