“But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.”
My Notes
What Does Acts 13:51 Mean?
"They shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium." Paul and Barnabas perform the symbolic act Jesus prescribed (Matthew 10:14): shaking dust from their feet as a testimony against those who rejected the gospel. The gesture declares: we've done our part. The rejection is on you. And we're moving on.
The dust-shaking is both farewell and judgment. It says: we don't carry your rejection with us. The weight of your refusal stays in your city, on your ground. We walk away clean. The responsibility for the rejection belongs to the rejecters, not the rejected messengers.
The movement to Iconium shows that rejection doesn't end the mission — it redirects it. The gospel that was refused in Antioch of Pisidia moves to Iconium. The message doesn't stop because one city said no. It goes to the next city. The rejection creates momentum rather than paralysis.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What rejection are you carrying that you need to shake off?
- 2.How does moving on after rejection create opportunity in new places?
- 3.What's the difference between abandoning people and shaking dust — releasing rejection?
- 4.What 'Iconium' might be waiting for you if you'd leave the city that rejected you?
Devotional
They shook the dust off and moved on. The gospel was rejected. The messengers didn't argue, didn't plead, didn't compromise the message to make it more palatable. They shook the dust and went to the next city.
The dust-shaking is a liberation gesture. It frees the messenger from the weight of rejection. You offered the truth. They refused. The dust of their city doesn't belong on your feet. Leave it where it lies and keep walking.
This is one of the hardest skills in any kind of ministry: the ability to be rejected and move on without internalizing the rejection. Paul and Barnabas don't sit in Antioch nursing their hurt. They don't replay the argument, wondering what they could have said differently. They shake the dust and go to Iconium.
The rejection redirected the mission rather than ending it. Antioch said no; Iconium gets the opportunity. The city that refused opens the door for the city that hasn't heard yet. In God's economy, rejection in one place is opportunity in another.
What dust are you still carrying from a rejection you should have shaken off? What city said no that you're still standing in, replaying the conversation? Shake the dust. Move to the next door. The rejection belongs to them. The mission belongs to you.
And Iconium is waiting.
