Colossians 3:16

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

My Notes

What Does Colossians 3:16 Mean?

Paul instructs believers to let the word of Christ dwell in them richly — not as a visitor but as a permanent resident, and not sparsely but richly, abundantly, overflowing.

"In all wisdom" qualifies the dwelling — the word is not just memorized. It is applied with wisdom. Knowledge without wisdom is information. Knowledge with wisdom is transformation.

The communal expression follows: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. The indwelling word produces communal worship. Personal saturation in Scripture overflows into corporate singing and mutual instruction.

"Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" makes the worship internal before it is external. The singing is not performance. It is the natural overflow of a heart that is full of Christ's word. Grace in the heart produces song from the lips.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does it look like for the word of Christ to 'dwell richly' rather than just being occasionally read?
  • 2.How does personal saturation in Scripture overflow into communal worship?
  • 3.What is the difference between singing as performance and singing 'with grace in your hearts'?
  • 4.How full of Christ's word are you right now — and what would 'richly' look like?

Devotional

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Not occasionally visit. Dwell — move in, unpack, take up permanent residence. And not minimally. Richly — abundantly, lavishly, more than enough.

In all wisdom. The word dwelling in you is not just quotation ability. It is wisdom — knowing how to live, what to do, when to speak, how to love. The Scriptures in your heart produce wisdom in your life.

Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. The word that fills you overflows to others. You teach through song. You admonish through worship. The communal expression of faith flows naturally from personal saturation in truth.

Singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. The singing is not for the audience. It is for the Lord. And it comes from grace — the unearned, unforced, joyful response to having Christ's word living richly inside you.

How full is your heart of Christ's word? Not how much Scripture you have read — how deeply has it taken up residence? Is it a visitor who drops by occasionally, or a permanent resident who has moved in richly?

The fullness of the word produces the overflow of the song.
