Colossians 3:17

Colossians 3:17
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

My Notes

What Does Colossians 3:17 Mean?

Paul issues a comprehensive command: and whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Whatsoever ye do — the scope is absolute. Not some things. Not spiritual things. Whatsoever — every action, every decision, every task, every interaction. The command has no exemptions. Nothing falls outside its reach.

In word or deed — the two categories cover all human activity. Word — everything you say. Deed — everything you do. Between speaking and acting, the totality of human behavior is captured. Nothing is left uncovered.

Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus — the name represents the person, the authority, the character of Christ. To do something in his name means to do it as his representative, under his authority, in a way that is consistent with who he is. The name is not a formula appended to actions. It is the standard by which every action is measured: would the Lord Jesus endorse this? Does this represent him well?

Giving thanks to God and the Father by him — the doing is accompanied by thanksgiving. The actions are not performed in grim duty but in grateful worship. Thanksgiving is the atmosphere in which the name-bearing activity takes place. By him — through Christ. The access to the Father, the ability to give thanks, the capacity to do anything in God's name — all of it flows through Jesus.

The verse eliminates the sacred-secular divide entirely. There is no category of activity that falls outside 'in the name of the Lord Jesus.' Eating, working, parenting, resting, creating, serving — all of it, in word and deed, in his name, with thanksgiving.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does it practically look like to do 'whatsoever' in the name of the Lord Jesus — including the mundane?
  • 2.How does 'in the name' function as a standard for evaluating everything you say and do?
  • 3.What area of your life have you treated as outside Christ's authority that this verse brings under his name?
  • 4.How does adding thanksgiving to every activity transform duty into worship?

Devotional

Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus. Whatsoever. Everything. Not just the spiritual activities. Not just the Sunday things. Every word you speak. Every action you take. Every email you send. Every meal you cook. Every conversation you have. All of it — in the name of the Lord Jesus.

In the name means as his representative. Under his authority. In a way that reflects who he is. It means pausing before you speak and asking: does this represent Jesus? It means doing your work as if Jesus were the one signing off on it. It means treating people as if you were acting on his behalf — because you are.

Do all. The word all is the most challenging part. Not most. All. The verse does not allow for a category of life that operates outside of Christ's name. Your job is in his name. Your relationships are in his name. Your leisure is in his name. The mundane tasks you do on autopilot — in his name. There is no secular corner of your life where Christ's authority does not reach.

Giving thanks to God and the Father by him. And while you do everything in his name, you do it with thanksgiving. Not grudgingly. Not as a burden. With gratitude — for the ability to work, to speak, to act, to live under the banner of his name. Thanksgiving is the atmosphere. His name is the authority. And by him — through Christ — you have access to the Father in everything you do.

This verse turns your entire life into worship. Not just the singing parts. All of it.
