Exodus 29:14

Exodus 29:14
But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.

My Notes

What Does Exodus 29:14 Mean?

"But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering." The EXTERIOR of the sin offering — the flesh, the skin, and the dung — is burned OUTSIDE THE CAMP. Not on the altar. OUTSIDE — beyond the camp's boundary, in the unclean zone, the place where refuse goes. The sin offering's external parts are treated as REFUSE — expelled from the community, burned in the place of rejection. The sacrifice that REMOVES sin is treated AS sin: cast outside, burned beyond the boundary.

The phrase "burn with fire without the camp" (tisroph ba'esh michutz lammachaneh — you shall burn with fire outside the camp) makes the burning-location SIGNIFICANT: the camp is the COMMUNITY. 'Outside the camp' is the place of EXCLUSION — where the unclean were sent, where the lepers lived, where the refuse was deposited. The sin offering is burned THERE — in the place of rejection. The sacrifice that deals with sin is treated like sin: expelled, excluded, burned outside.

The "it is a sin offering" (chatat hu — a sin-offering it is) IDENTIFIES the sacrifice: the bull isn't a burnt offering (which would be entirely consumed on the altar). It's a SIN OFFERING — the specific sacrifice that addresses SIN. The sin offering has its own RULES: the fat goes to the altar (verse 13). The flesh goes OUTSIDE. The sin offering is SPLIT between the sacred (altar) and the rejected (camp-exterior). The sacrifice carries the sin to the place of exclusion.

The writer of HEBREWS connects this to JESUS: 'Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate' (Hebrews 13:12). The sin offering burned outside the camp POINTS to Christ crucified OUTSIDE Jerusalem's walls. The exclusion-location of the Old Testament sacrifice becomes the crucifixion-location of the New Testament Savior.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does Christ being crucified OUTSIDE the gate (the sin-offering's location) teach about where He bore sin?
  • 2.What does the sin offering being EXPELLED from the community teach about sin's destination?
  • 3.How does the sacrifice being SPLIT (interior to altar, exterior to outside) describe dual movement?
  • 4.What 'outside the camp' — what exclusion-zone — has Christ entered on your behalf?

Devotional

The flesh. The skin. The dung. Burned OUTSIDE the camp. It is a sin offering. The exterior of the sacrifice is treated as REFUSE — expelled from the community, burned in the rejection-zone. The sin offering that removes sin is treated AS sin: cast outside, excluded, burned beyond the boundary. The sacrifice goes WHERE sin goes.

The 'without the camp' is the place of EXCLUSION: the camp is community. Outside the camp is rejection — where the unclean lived, where the lepers waited, where refuse was burned. The sin offering goes THERE. The sacrifice that addresses sin is TREATED like sin — expelled to the exclusion-zone. The going-outside is the bearing-of-sin. The sacrifice carries the sin to the place where sin is deposited.

The 'it is a sin offering' identifies the SPECIFIC sacrifice: this isn't a fellowship offering (shared at the table) or a burnt offering (entirely consumed on the altar). It's a SIN offering — the sacrifice specifically designed to DEAL WITH SIN. And the sin offering has a unique GEOGRAPHY: the interior goes UP (altar). The exterior goes OUT (camp-exterior). The sacrifice is SPLIT — part ascending to God, part expelled to the rejection-zone. The sin offering occupies BOTH spaces.

The connection to CHRIST is made explicit by Hebrews 13:12: Jesus 'suffered OUTSIDE the gate' — crucified outside Jerusalem's walls, in the exclusion-zone, at the place where the sin offering was burned. The Old Testament sin offering burned outside the camp PREFIGURES Christ bearing sin outside the city. The geography is the theology: the sacrifice goes where the sin goes — OUTSIDE.

What does Christ suffering OUTSIDE the gate — in the sin-offering's exclusion-zone — teach about where He bore YOUR sin?
