“This Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given: and the king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him.”
My Notes
What Does Ezra 7:6 Mean?
Ezra is introduced with a compact biography that reveals everything you need to know about why God used him. He's a scribe — a scholar of Scripture. He's skilled — the word "ready" (māhîr) means expert, proficient, masterful. And the reason things go his way is stated plainly: the hand of the LORD his God was upon him.
"This Ezra went up from Babylon" — the direction is theological before it's geographical. He went up. Out of exile. Out of the land of captivity. Back toward Jerusalem. The entire book of Ezra is about going up — returning to the place of God's presence after generations of distance.
"He was a ready scribe in the law of Moses" — Ezra wasn't casually familiar with Scripture. He was an expert. The word "ready" describes someone who has devoted their life to mastering a subject. Ezra didn't just read the law. He studied it, absorbed it, internalized it, and could teach it with authority. His competence wasn't natural talent alone. It was the product of sustained, disciplined engagement with God's word.
"Which the LORD God of Israel had given" — even the law itself is framed as a gift. The Torah didn't fall from the sky randomly. God gave it. Ezra's expertise wasn't in a human document. It was in a divine gift. His scholarship was in service of revelation.
"The king granted him all his request, according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him" — a pagan king says yes to everything Ezra asks. Not because Ezra was politically savvy. Because God's hand was on him. The hand of God opened doors that no human credential could have opened. Ezra's skill gave him the platform. God's hand gave him the results.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What are you becoming a 'ready scribe' in — what skill or knowledge are you developing with sustained discipline?
- 2.How do you hold together personal competence and dependence on God's hand? Which one do you lean toward more?
- 3.Where have you seen 'the hand of the LORD' open doors that your credentials alone couldn't have opened?
- 4.What would it look like to approach your work, your study, or your calling with Ezra's combination of expertise and humble reliance on God?
Devotional
Ezra's story is the intersection of two things: deep personal competence and the unmistakable hand of God. He didn't coast on divine favor without doing the work. He was a ready scribe — he'd put in the years, done the study, developed the expertise. But he also didn't rely on his competence alone. The king granted his request because of God's hand, not because of Ezra's résumé.
That combination is the model for a life that matters. Work as though everything depends on your preparation. Trust as though everything depends on God's hand. The people who impact the world most deeply are the ones who bring both to the table: excellent skill and humble dependence.
The phrase "the hand of the LORD his God upon him" appears repeatedly in Ezra — it's the book's theme. Everything that goes right traces back to God's hand. The king's generosity. The safe journey. The community's response. Ezra's influence. All of it flows from God's hand being upon him. Not beside him. Upon him. The weight of God's favor and direction pressing down on every aspect of his life.
What are you becoming an expert in? What are you studying, mastering, developing with the discipline of a ready scribe? And whose hand is upon your work? You can have tremendous skill and accomplish very little if God's hand isn't in it. You can have God's hand and squander it if you haven't done the work. Ezra brought both. That's why a pagan king gave him everything he asked for.
