Matthew 28:20

Matthew 28:20
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway , even unto the end of the world. Amen.

My Notes

What Does Matthew 28:20 Mean?

The final words of Jesus in Matthew's Gospel combine instruction with promise. Teaching them to observe all things — the discipleship mandate isn't just about conversion. It's about ongoing formation. Everything Jesus commanded is meant to be taught, practiced, and passed on.

Then the promise: "I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." The word "alway" (literally "all the days") means every single day, not just the dramatic ones. Not just the mission trips or the mountaintop moments. All the days — including the boring, hard, ordinary ones.

"Even unto the end of the world" (or the end of the age) establishes a timeframe with no expiration. This promise doesn't wear out. It doesn't sunset. It runs to the end of everything.

Matthew's Gospel begins with Emmanuel — "God with us" (1:23) — and ends with "I am with you alway." The whole narrative is bookended by presence. The central claim of the Gospel is that God has come to be with his people, and he's staying.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does 'all the days' mean for the ordinary days when you don't feel God's presence?
  • 2.How does this final promise bookend Matthew's Gospel, which begins with 'Emmanuel — God with us'?
  • 3.Where do you need to hear 'I am with you' most urgently today?
  • 4.How does Jesus' promise of presence change how you approach the mandate to make disciples?

Devotional

I am with you alway. Not sometimes. Not when you're performing well. Not when your faith is strong. Alway. All the days.

Jesus said this right before ascending — leaving the physical world. And his parting promise wasn't "I'll be watching from above" or "good luck with everything." It was: I am with you. Present tense. Active. Ongoing.

All the days means Monday and Saturday. It means the days you feel close to God and the days you feel nothing. The days you succeed and the days you fail. The days you remember to pray and the days you forget. He is with you on every single one.

Even unto the end of the world. This promise has an expiration date, and it's the end of time itself. As long as there are days, he's in them. As long as there's a world, he's with you in it.

The Bible ends where it begins — with presence. Emmanuel, God with us. Whatever you face today, you're not facing it alone. That's not a feeling to conjure up. It's a promise to stand on.

I am with you. Alway. Even today.
