Galatians 5:22

Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

My Notes

What Does Galatians 5:22 Mean?

Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit — not fruits (plural) but fruit (singular). This is one harvest with multiple expressions: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith. The singular noun suggests these qualities are inseparable; they grow together as one integrated character.

Each quality is relational. Love, joy, and peace describe your inner state. Longsuffering, gentleness, and goodness describe how you treat others. Faith (or faithfulness) describes your reliability.

The fruit is of the Spirit — meaning it is produced by the Holy Spirit, not by human effort. You do not manufacture these qualities through discipline. They grow naturally in a life connected to the Spirit, the way fruit grows naturally on a healthy tree.

Paul has just listed the works of the flesh (5:19-21) — a catalog of destructive behaviors. The fruit of the Spirit is the alternative: not more rules, but a different source of life that produces different results.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Which fruit of the Spirit is most evident in your life right now? Which is most absent?
  • 2.How is fruit different from work — what does that distinction mean for your spiritual growth?
  • 3.Why do you think Paul lists this as one fruit rather than nine separate fruits?
  • 4.What does it look like to 'stay connected to the vine' so that fruit grows naturally?

Devotional

The fruit of the Spirit. Not fruits — fruit. One unified harvest that shows up in nine expressions. You do not get to pick and choose. Where the Spirit is producing, all of these grow together.

Love, joy, peace. That is the inner life the Spirit creates — not dependent on circumstances, not manufactured by willpower.

Longsuffering, gentleness, goodness. That is how the Spirit-filled person treats others — with patience that endures, gentleness that does not overpower, and goodness that actively blesses.

Faith. Faithfulness. Reliability. The kind of person others can count on because the Spirit has made them steady.

The key word is fruit, not work. Fruit is not produced by straining. It is produced by remaining connected to the source. A branch does not grunt its way to grapes. It stays attached to the vine and the fruit comes.

Where is the fruit growing in your life? Where is it absent? The solution to missing fruit is not more effort. It is deeper connection to the Spirit who produces it.
