Genesis 18:11

Genesis 18:11
Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

My Notes

What Does Genesis 18:11 Mean?

"Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women." The narrator pauses to establish the IMPOSSIBILITY: Abraham and Sarah are OLD — not just elderly but 'well stricken in age' (advanced, deep into old age). And Sarah has passed MENOPAUSE — 'it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.' The biological clock has STOPPED. The reproductive capacity has ENDED. The promise of a child faces the wall of biological impossibility. The narrator makes sure you understand: this is IMPOSSIBLE by natural means.

The phrase "old and well stricken in age" (zeqenim ba'im bayyamim — old, having come into the days) describes ADVANCED age: not just 'getting older' but having ARRIVED at old age — deep into the final season, well past the productive years. Abraham is 99 (17:1). Sarah is 89. The age is emphasized to establish the SCALE of the miracle that will follow. The older they are, the bigger the miracle must be.

The "it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women" (chadal lihyot leSarah orach kannashim — it had ceased to be for Sarah a way/path like the women) is the MEDICAL detail that makes the promise SUPERNATURAL: Sarah has gone through menopause. The reproductive cycle has ENDED. The biological mechanism that produces children has STOPPED. The promise of a child now requires not just UNLIKELY conception but IMPOSSIBLE conception. The biology says no. The promise says yes.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What impossibility in your life might be the canvas for a miracle?
  • 2.What does the narrator establishing biological impossibility BEFORE the promise teach about how God works?
  • 3.How does menopause being stated plainly model honest acknowledgment of real limitations?
  • 4.What 'ceased to be' capacity in your life is God about to use anyway?

Devotional

Abraham and Sarah are OLD. Well stricken in age. And Sarah has passed menopause — 'it ceased to be with her after the manner of women.' The narrator pauses to make sure you UNDERSTAND: this is biologically IMPOSSIBLE. The reproductive capacity is GONE. The clock has STOPPED. And God is about to promise a child.

The 'old and well stricken in age' establishes the SCALE of impossibility: not just older. ADVANCED — deep into the final season, well past every productive year. The age isn't incidental. It's FOUNDATIONAL to the story. The older they are, the more impossible the promise, the bigger the miracle. The impossibility is the CANVAS the miracle is painted on.

The 'ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women' is the BIOLOGICAL impossibility stated plainly: menopause. The reproductive cycle has ENDED. The body has STOPPED doing what producing children requires. The mechanism is CLOSED. The path (orach — way, road, monthly cycle) has CEASED. The narrator doesn't use euphemism to soften the medical reality. The biology is stated. The impossibility is established.

The PURPOSE of stating the impossibility is to MAGNIFY the promise: the child that will be born (Isaac) will be born INTO impossibility. The miracle requires the impossibility to be ESTABLISHED first. If Sarah were young and fertile, the birth would be natural. Because Sarah is old and post-menopausal, the birth is SUPERNATURAL. The biological death of the possibility is the theological birth of the miracle.

What impossibility has God established in YOUR life — that might be the canvas for a miracle?
