Hebrews 12:15

Hebrews 12:15
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

My Notes

What Does Hebrews 12:15 Mean?

The writer of Hebrews warns against a specific spiritual danger: failing to receive the grace of God, and allowing a root of bitterness to spring up and defile many.

"Looking diligently" means active vigilance — this is not a passive warning. You must look carefully, watchfully, intentionally. The danger does not announce itself.

"Lest any man fail of the grace of God" — the grace is available. The danger is falling short of it — not reaching it, not receiving it, not appropriating what has been offered. Grace can be missed.

"Lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled" — bitterness is described as a root. It grows underground before it becomes visible. And when it springs up, it does not just damage the individual. It defiles many. Bitterness is contagious. It spreads. One bitter person can contaminate an entire community.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does 'failing of the grace of God' look like — how can someone miss available grace?
  • 2.Where might a root of bitterness be growing in your heart that has not yet surfaced?
  • 3.How does bitterness 'defile many' — how have you seen it contaminate a community?
  • 4.What does 'looking diligently' mean practically — how do you watch for bitterness?

Devotional

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God. Grace is available — but you can miss it. You can fall short. You can be in the vicinity of grace and not receive it. The looking must be diligent.

Lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you. Bitterness grows underground first. You do not see it forming. It develops in the dark places of your heart — unforgiveness, offense, resentment — and by the time it springs up, it has already taken root.

And thereby many be defiled. Bitterness is not a private problem. When it surfaces, it contaminates everyone around you. Your bitterness becomes their defilement. The root in your heart produces fruit in your community.

The warning is for the community: look diligently. Watch for it. In yourself and in each other. The root grows quietly, and by the time it is visible, the damage has already spread.

What root is growing in your heart right now? What offense, what unforgiveness, what resentment is developing underground? The time to address it is before it springs up — because once it does, it does not just trouble you. It defiles many.
