“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 12:14 Mean?
The writer of Hebrews issues a double command: follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Peace and holiness are both required. Neither is optional.
"Follow peace" — the word follow (dioko) means to pursue actively, to chase. Peace does not happen passively. It is pursued — with effort, with intention, with all men (not just the easy ones).
"And holiness" — paired with peace but distinct from it. Holiness is not peace. It is set-apartness, consecration, moral purity. Both are required.
"Without which no man shall see the Lord" — the holiness is described as a requirement for seeing God. Not as an entrance fee but as a necessary condition. The unholy cannot see the holy. The condition of the seer must match the nature of the seen.
The verse does not say holiness earns the right to see God. It says holiness is the condition without which seeing God is impossible. You cannot see what you are not prepared to see.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How is pursuing peace different from simply avoiding conflict?
- 2.What does 'without which no man shall see the Lord' mean for the necessity of holiness?
- 3.How do peace (horizontal) and holiness (vertical) work together as a complete life?
- 4.Where are you neglecting one in favor of the other — peace without holiness or holiness without peace?
Devotional
Follow peace with all men. Pursue it. Chase it. Not just with friends and allies. With all men — including the difficult, the hostile, the ones who make peace feel impossible. The pursuit is active.
And holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Holiness is non-negotiable. Not optional. Not advanced-level Christianity. Essential. Without it, no one sees God. The condition is absolute.
The double command creates a complete life: peaceful toward others and holy toward God. Horizontal peace and vertical purity. Both are pursued. Both are required.
Without which no man shall see the Lord. That phrase should stop every casual approach to holiness. The holiness is not decorative. It is the lens through which God becomes visible. Without it, you cannot see him — not because he hides, but because unholy eyes cannot perceive what is holy.
This is not about earning salvation through moral performance. It is about the transformation that salvation produces. The saved are being made holy — and the holiness is what enables them to see the God who saved them.
Are you pursuing both? Peace with all men — even the ones who test your patience? And holiness — the set-apart life that prepares your eyes to see God? Both are required. Both are pursued. And neither happens without effort.
