“For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 3:14 Mean?
The writer of Hebrews states a conditional reality: for we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end.
We are made partakers (metochoi) of Christ — the word means sharers, partners, those who participate in. The participation in Christ is real — believers share in his life, his inheritance, his Spirit. The same word appears in 3:1 (partakers of the heavenly calling) and 1:9 (fellows/partners). The partnership with Christ is the highest privilege of the Christian life.
If we hold — the conditional particle (eanper) introduces a genuine condition. The partaking is connected to holding. The verse does not say the partaking can be lost — it says the partaking is evidenced by holding. The 'if' functions to identify who the genuine partakers are: they are the ones who hold firm.
The beginning of our confidence (hupostasis) — the word means foundation, substance, assurance. The beginning (arche) of this confidence refers to the initial faith, the original trust that brought them to Christ. The command is to maintain that same confidence — not to develop a new one but to keep the first one alive.
Steadfast unto the end — the confidence must persist. Not fluctuate. Not fade. Steadfast (bebaios) means firm, stable, reliable. Unto the end — the perseverance is lifelong. The confidence that began at conversion must remain firm through every trial, every doubt, every season of difficulty, all the way to the end.
The verse functions as both assurance and warning: assurance that believers are genuine partakers of Christ, and warning that the evidence of genuine participation is perseverance. Those who abandon confidence were never truly partakers. Those who hold firm demonstrate that they are.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean to be a 'partaker of Christ' — and how is this more than just believing in him?
- 2.How does the 'if' in this verse function — as a threat to security or as evidence of genuineness?
- 3.What does 'the beginning of our confidence' refer to — and how do you maintain it over a lifetime?
- 4.Where is your confidence being tested right now — and what does holding steadfast look like in that situation?
Devotional
We are made partakers of Christ. Partakers — sharers, participants, partners. You do not just believe in Christ from a distance. You share in him. His life is your life. His inheritance is your inheritance. His victory is your victory. The partnership is real, intimate, and comprehensive.
If we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end. If. The word is uncomfortable. It introduces a condition — not for earning the partnership but for evidencing it. The genuine partakers are the ones who hold firm. The confidence that began when you first trusted Christ — that same confidence must remain. Not upgraded. Not replaced. Held. Steadfast. All the way to the end.
The beginning of our confidence. Remember when you first believed? The clarity. The assurance. The fresh certainty that Christ was real and the gospel was true. That is the confidence this verse is talking about. Not a more sophisticated version. The same one. Held firm through every season — the ones that strengthen faith and the ones that test it.
Steadfast unto the end. The end is not next week. It is the end of your life. The confidence must persist through decades, through suffering, through unanswered prayers, through seasons when God feels distant. Steadfast — not perfect, not unwavering in intensity, but firm in foundation. Still there. Still holding.
This verse is not designed to make you anxious. It is designed to make you serious. The Christian life is not a sprint of initial enthusiasm. It is a lifelong hold — gripping the same confidence you started with, all the way to the finish.
