“And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 11:2 Mean?
Isaiah describes the Spirit's sevenfold resting on the Messiah: the spirit of the LORD, wisdom and understanding, counsel and might, knowledge and the fear of the LORD. Seven dimensions of the Spirit's anointing — comprehensive, complete, and perfect.
The Spirit rests — not visits temporarily but settles permanently. The anointing is not occasional. It is the Messiah's permanent condition.
The pairs are deliberate: wisdom and understanding (intellectual), counsel and might (practical), knowledge and fear of the LORD (relational). Every dimension of capacity is covered by the Spirit's sevenfold anointing.
Jesus fulfilled this at his baptism when the Spirit descended and remained on him (John 1:32-33). The sevenfold Spirit that Isaiah described settled on the carpenter from Nazareth and never left.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the sevenfold Spirit describe the completeness of the Messiah's anointing?
- 2.Which pair — wisdom/understanding, counsel/might, or knowledge/fear — do you most need?
- 3.What does the Spirit 'resting' permanently mean compared to temporary empowerment?
- 4.How does the same Spirit dwelling in you connect you to the Messiah's anointing?
Devotional
The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him. Rest — not pass through. Not visit temporarily. Rest — settle permanently, take up residence, make the Messiah his home.
The spirit of wisdom and understanding. Wisdom to know what is right. Understanding to grasp the depths. The intellectual dimension of the Spirit's anointing — the Messiah sees everything clearly.
The spirit of counsel and might. Counsel to know what to do. Might to do it. The practical dimension — not just knowing the right course but having the power to execute it.
The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. Knowledge of God — intimate, experiential, deep. And the fear of the LORD — reverence, awe, holy trembling. The relational dimension — connected to God with both knowing and fearing.
Seven aspects of one Spirit. Intellectual, practical, relational — every dimension covered. The Messiah operates with the fullness of the Spirit in every capacity.
This same Spirit — the sevenfold anointing that rested on Jesus — now dwells in believers. Not in the same fullness that Jesus carried. But the same Spirit. The wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear that rested on the Messiah are available to those who belong to him.
What aspect of the Spirit's sevenfold anointing do you need most today?
