Isaiah 61:1

Isaiah 61:1
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted , to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

My Notes

What Does Isaiah 61:1 Mean?

Isaiah speaks a prophecy that Jesus himself would later quote in the synagogue at Nazareth (Luke 4:18-19), declaring it fulfilled in himself. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me — anointing for a specific mission.

The mission is detailed: preach good tidings to the meek, bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives, open prisons. Each element addresses a different form of human suffering — poverty, heartbreak, bondage, imprisonment.

The word "anointed" (mashach) is the root of Messiah. This verse describes what the Messiah will do — and it is not military conquest or political revolution. It is healing, liberating, and comforting the most vulnerable.

When Jesus read this passage and said "this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears," he was claiming to be the anointed one Isaiah described. The mission statement of the Messiah is not power. It is compassion directed at brokenness.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Which part of this mission statement speaks most directly to your current situation?
  • 2.What does it reveal about God's priorities that the Messiah's mission focuses on the broken rather than the powerful?
  • 3.How did Jesus fulfill this prophecy — and how is he still fulfilling it today?
  • 4.Where do you need liberty, healing, or good news right now?

Devotional

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me. This is the mission statement of the Messiah — and it reads like a job description for a healer, not a conqueror.

Good tidings to the meek. Binding up the brokenhearted. Liberty to captives. Opening of prisons. Every line addresses someone in pain. The anointing is not for the powerful. It is for the crushed.

When Jesus stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth and read these words aloud, then sat down and said "Today this is fulfilled in your hearing" — the room went silent. He was claiming to be the person Isaiah described. And his ministry proved it: he healed the sick, freed the demonized, touched the untouchable, and spoke hope to the hopeless.

If you are meek, brokenhearted, captive, or imprisoned — by circumstances, by addiction, by grief, by anything — this verse describes the person who came specifically for you. The anointing was for your situation. The mission was aimed at your need.

You are not outside the scope of what Jesus came to do. You are exactly inside it.
