- Verse 18
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 34:18 Mean?
David declares a truth about God's proximity to pain: the LORD is near to the brokenhearted. Not near to the successful, the composed, or the spiritually impressive. Near to the broken.
The word "nigh" means close — not watching from a distance, but drawn near. God moves toward brokenness. The very thing that makes you want to hide is the thing that draws God closer.
"Saveth such as be of a contrite spirit" — contrite means crushed, ground to powder. The person God saves is not the one holding it together. It is the one who has been crushed and knows it.
This verse inverts the usual assumption about spiritual proximity. We tend to think God is close when we are at our best — praying well, living right, feeling faithful. David says the opposite: God is closest when you are most broken.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Where are you broken right now — and have you let God near that place?
- 2.Why do you think God draws closest to the broken rather than the successful?
- 3.What makes it hard to believe God is near when you are at your lowest?
- 4.How is a contrite spirit different from self-pity?
Devotional
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. Not near to the put-together. Near to the shattered.
If you are broken right now — if your heart has been crushed by loss, betrayal, disappointment, or your own failure — this verse says something that might be hard to believe: God is closer to you now than when things were fine.
Brokenness draws God near. That is the opposite of what most people expect. We think we need to get cleaned up before approaching God. We think our mess repels him. David says it attracts him.
A contrite spirit — crushed, ground down — is not disqualification. It is the address where God delivers salvation. He saves the crushed ones. Not the ones who look like they do not need saving.
Where are you broken right now? The instinct is to hide it, to manage it, to pretend it is not as bad as it is. But David says that broken place is exactly where God is standing. He is not waiting for you to recover. He is nigh — right now, in the rubble.
