Isaiah 23:18

Isaiah 23:18
And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing.

My Notes

What Does Isaiah 23:18 Mean?

Isaiah makes a surprising prophecy about Tyre — the great commercial city of the ancient world: one day, its merchandise and profit will be "holiness to the LORD." The wealth of this pagan trading center will be dedicated to God and used to feed and clothe those who serve before Him.

This is a conversion prophecy, not a destruction prophecy. Tyre won't be destroyed (though it will be judged first, as the rest of chapter 23 describes). It will be redirected. The same commercial energy that served mammon will eventually serve God. The trade networks that enriched pagans will sustain God's people.

The phrase "not treasured nor laid up" means the wealth won't be hoarded. It will circulate — flowing to those who serve God, providing sufficient food and durable clothing. Tyre's conversion isn't just spiritual. It's economic. The markets themselves are redeemed.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What skills, resources, or wealth in your life are currently serving yourself that could be redirected to serve God?
  • 2.How does the idea of 'economic redemption' — not destroying commerce but redirecting it — change your view of money?
  • 3.Does the prophecy that even Tyre's profits become holy encourage you about things in your life that feel too far gone?
  • 4.What would it look like for your 'merchandise' to not be hoarded but to flow to those who need it?

Devotional

Tyre's profits — holiness to the LORD. The most aggressively commercial city in the ancient world, with its wealth dedicated to God.

This is one of the most surprising prophecies in Isaiah. He doesn't just predict Tyre's judgment (that comes earlier in the chapter). He predicts its redemption. The same city that was the symbol of greed, maritime power, and pagan wealth will one day funnel its resources to feed and clothe God's servants.

The merchandise isn't destroyed. It's repurposed. The commerce continues, but the direction changes. What used to be hoarded and consumed for self-indulgence now flows — freely, generously — to those who serve the LORD. Not treasured. Not laid up. Given.

This is a vision of economic redemption. God doesn't just save souls. He redirects economies. The same systems that served greed can serve generosity. The same skills that built pagan empires can build God's kingdom. Nothing is too far gone. Not even Tyre.

What in your life has been serving the wrong purpose? What gift, skill, or resource has been operating in 'Tyre mode' — accumulating for yourself — that could be redirected to God's service? Isaiah says even Tyre's profits can become holiness. If Tyre can be redirected, so can you.
