- Isaiah
- Chapter 31
- Verse 1
“Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 31:1 Mean?
Isaiah pronounces woe on those who go to Egypt for help — who trust in military alliances rather than in God. The specific sin: relying on horses and chariots (Egyptian military power) instead of looking to the Holy One of Israel.
"They look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD" — the woe is not just for making alliances. It is for making alliances instead of seeking God. The horses and chariots replaced God, not supplemented him.
The contrast is between visible military power (horses, chariots, horsemen) and the invisible power of God (the Holy One of Israel). The temptation is to trust what you can see over what you cannot.
The warning applies beyond military alliances: any time you substitute human resources for divine dependence — when you trust in strategy, money, connections, or power rather than in God — you are going down to Egypt for help.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What is your 'Egypt' — the human resource you trust instead of seeking God?
- 2.Why is it so tempting to rely on what you can see rather than on the invisible God?
- 3.How do you distinguish between wise planning and replacing God with strategy?
- 4.What would 'looking unto the Holy One of Israel' look like in your current situation?
Devotional
Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help. Egypt was the superpower. Their military was the strongest available. Going to Egypt for help was the rational, strategic thing to do.
And stay on horses, and trust in chariots. The trust was in what they could see — horses, chariots, numbers. Tangible, measurable, impressive military force. The visible solution to a visible problem.
But they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD. That is the woe. Not that they had a problem. That they sought the wrong solution. They chose Egypt over God. Horses over the Holy One. What they could see over what they could not.
Every generation has its Egypt — the powerful system, the impressive resource, the rational alliance that promises security. And every generation faces the same temptation: trust the visible or seek the invisible.
Where is your Egypt? What are you going down to for help instead of looking to the Holy One? It might be financial security, political power, social connections, or personal competence. None of these are evil. But when they replace God — when you trust them instead of seeking him — that is the woe.
The Holy One of Israel is available. But you have to look up from Egypt to see him.
