Isaiah 55:12

Isaiah 55:12
For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

My Notes

What Does Isaiah 55:12 Mean?

Isaiah paints the joy of restoration with cosmic celebration: for ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Ye shall go out with joy — the going out (yatsa — to depart, to leave, to emerge from) is the exodus language: leaving captivity, departing from exile, emerging from bondage. But this exodus is different from Egypt: the departure is with joy (simchah — gladness, delight, festive celebration). The first exodus was fearful flight. This going out is joyful procession.

Be led forth with peace — led (yabal — to be conducted, to be brought along). The leadership is not anxious. It is peaceful (shalom — completeness, wholeness, wellbeing). The people are not fleeing. They are being escorted — conducted by God along a peaceful path. The peace characterizes both the journey and the destination.

The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing — creation joins the celebration. The mountains (harim) and hills (gevaot) — the largest, most immovable features of the landscape — break into song. The singing (rinnah — a ringing cry, joyful shouting) erupts: creation that has been groaning (Romans 8:22) now breaks forth in the praise it has been suppressing. The before you means the singing greets the departing exiles — creation celebrates their liberation.

All the trees of the field shall clap their hands — the trees (etsim) clap (macha kaph — to strike the palms together). The image is of wind-tossed branches applauding — the forest itself joining the celebration with rhythmic clapping. Every tree participates: all the trees of the field. The applause of creation is universal.

The verse is the climax of Isaiah 55, which begins with the invitation to come to the waters (v.1) and builds through the effectiveness of God's word (v.10-11) to the triumphant exit from captivity. The word goes forth and accomplishes (v.11). The people go out with joy (v.12). The word's effectiveness produces the people's liberation produces creation's celebration. The entire cosmos participates in the joy of redemption.

Paul draws on this tradition in Romans 8:19-21: the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God... the creature itself also shall be delivered. Creation's celebration in Isaiah 55:12 anticipates the cosmic liberation Paul describes — the day when the whole creation joins the redeemed in songs and clapping.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does 'going out with joy and led with peace' differ from every previous exodus — and what does the difference communicate?
  • 2.What does creation breaking into singing and clapping describe about the cosmic scope of redemption?
  • 3.How does Romans 8:19-21 (creation groaning, waiting for liberation) connect to the singing mountains and clapping trees of this verse?
  • 4.What captivity are you being led out of — and can you begin to hear the mountains singing on the road ahead?

Devotional

Ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace. Going out — leaving the captivity, departing the exile, stepping out of bondage. But not running. Not fleeing in terror. Going out with joy. Led with peace. The departure is not escape. It is procession — a victory march conducted by God, characterized by gladness and wholeness. The exodus of joy.

The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing. The mountains sing. The hills join. The landscape that witnessed the exile now witnesses the return — and it cannot stay silent. The singing breaks forth — erupts, as though the creation has been holding it in and can no longer contain it. The mountains that watched you leave in sorrow greet you with singing on the way home.

All the trees of the field shall clap their hands. The trees applaud. The wind moves through the branches and the forest claps — every tree, the whole field, a standing ovation from creation for the people God is bringing home. The image is playful and overwhelming: the world itself celebrates your redemption. The trees that lined the road of your exile now line the road of your return — and they are clapping.

Creation joins the celebration because creation shares in the redemption. Romans 8:19-21: the whole creation groans, waiting for the liberation of God's children. When the children go free, the creation breaks forth. The singing mountains and clapping trees are not mere poetry. They are prophecy — the anticipation of a day when the entire created order participates in the joy that the gospel produces.

This is where your story is heading. Not more exile. Not permanent captivity. Joy. Peace. Singing mountains. Clapping trees. The departure from everything that held you, accompanied by a cosmic standing ovation. The creation that groaned over your bondage will celebrate your freedom. And the God who led you out will lead you with peace all the way home.
