- Chapter 24
- Verse 1
“And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.”
My Notes
What Does Joshua 24:1 Mean?
Joshua gathers all Israel for his final address — the famous "choose you this day whom ye will serve" speech (verse 15). The location is Shechem, the place where God first promised the land to Abraham (Genesis 12:6-7). The setting is deliberate: Joshua brings them back to where the story began.
He calls every level of leadership: elders, heads, judges, officers. This isn't a casual assembly. It's a formal covenant renewal ceremony. And the phrase "they presented themselves before God" indicates this is more than a political gathering. God Himself is the audience. They're standing before Him, not just before Joshua.
"All the tribes" — no one is excluded. The covenant isn't offered to the faithful and withheld from the wavering. Every tribe, every leader, every person is called to the same decision point.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What is your 'Shechem' — the place where you need to return to remember how your story with God began?
- 2.How does knowing you're 'presented before God' in your daily choices change how you make them?
- 3.Why do you think Joshua gathered every leader and every tribe — why was no one exempt from this decision?
- 4.When was the last time you actively, consciously chose to serve God rather than just defaulting to habit?
Devotional
Joshua brought them back to where it started. Shechem — the place where God first told Abraham "I'll give this land to your descendants." Now, generations later, those descendants are standing on the fulfilled promise, being asked: will you keep serving the God who brought you here?
There's genius in the geography. Joshua didn't choose a neutral location. He chose the place of origin. He brought them back to the beginning and said: remember why you're here. Remember who made this possible. Now choose.
"They presented themselves before God" — this is the detail that elevates the gathering from a political assembly to a spiritual reckoning. They weren't just facing Joshua. They were standing before the one who had been with them since Abraham. The audience wasn't the crowd. It was God.
Every major decision in your life has this quality, whether you recognize it or not. You're not just choosing in front of friends, family, or culture. You're presented before God. And the question Joshua will ask — who will you serve? — isn't a one-time decision. It's a question that returns to you at every Shechem in your life.
