Joshua 7:13

Joshua 7:13
Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

My Notes

What Does Joshua 7:13 Mean?

"Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you." After the defeat at Ai, God reveals the cause: someone in the camp has taken devoted things from the destruction of Jericho. The entire nation is affected by one person's hidden sin. Israel "canst not stand" — military defeat is the symptom of a spiritual disease.

The command to "sanctify yourselves" means prepare through purification. The problem must be identified and removed before the nation can advance. Hidden sin doesn't stay hidden in its effects — it poisons the entire community's capacity to function in God's purposes.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What 'accursed thing' might be hidden in your camp — your home, your church, your team — that's affecting everyone?
  • 2.How does one person's concealed sin affect an entire community's ability to function?
  • 3.Why does God require the removal of the hidden thing before he'll restore the community's effectiveness?
  • 4.What would 'sanctifying yourself' look like as preparation for what God wants to do next in your life?

Devotional

There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee. One person's hidden sin has paralyzed an entire nation. Israel just conquered Jericho — walls fell, the city burned, victory was total. And now, at tiny Ai, they're routed. Thirty-six men die. The army flees. Joshua falls on his face in confusion. And God says: the problem isn't Ai. The problem is inside your camp.

Achan had taken gold, silver, and a Babylonian garment from Jericho — items God had devoted to destruction. He buried them under his tent. Nobody knew. Nobody saw. But God saw. And the hidden theft made the entire nation unable to stand before a minor enemy.

This is the principle of communal consequence: one person's concealed sin can affect everyone connected to them. The army at Ai didn't know about Achan's theft. The soldiers who died weren't guilty. But they paid the price anyway because the accursed thing was in the camp.

Before you dismiss this as unfair, consider how it works in your own community. One leader's hidden sin collapses an entire ministry. One family member's secret addiction poisons every relationship in the household. One person's concealed deception undermines a team's effectiveness. The individual hid it. The community bears it.

"Thou canst not stand before thine enemies until ye take away the accursed thing." You can strategize, pray, prepare, and plan — but if there's something hidden in the camp that God has marked as accursed, nothing else will work. The first order of business isn't a better battle plan. It's sanctification.
