Joshua 9:1

Joshua 9:1
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

My Notes

What Does Joshua 9:1 Mean?

After Jericho and Ai, "all the kings" on the western side of the Jordan hear what happened—and form a coalition. The Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—six nations that normally competed with each other—unite against the common threat: Israel. The conquest has produced something the Canaanite nations couldn't produce on their own: unity. Their shared fear of Israel overcomes their mutual hostility.

The geographic description—"in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon"—means the coalition covers every type of terrain: highland, lowland, and coastal. The resistance isn't limited to one region or one kind of geography. It's comprehensive. The entire land is organizing against Israel.

The coalition's formation is both a threat and a validation: Israel is so effective that nations that normally fight each other are joining forces to fight Israel instead. The enemy's unity is proportional to the threat Israel represents. The more successful God's people are, the more coordinated the opposition becomes. Victory produces alliance against you. Effectiveness produces organized resistance.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Has your effectiveness produced more organized opposition? Does that feel like failure or validation?
  • 2.The enemy unites against what threatens them most. What does the opposition you face reveal about your impact?
  • 3.The coalition covered every terrain. When resistance comes from every direction, is that evidence of failure or of effectiveness?
  • 4.Your success creates their coordination. How does knowing that reframe the opposition you're experiencing?

Devotional

Six nations that normally fight each other suddenly agree on one thing: they need to stop Israel. Hills, valleys, coastlands—every region represented. Every terrain covered. The Canaanite nations heard what happened at Jericho and Ai and decided: we need to work together or we'll fall separately.

The coalition is the enemy's response to God's effectiveness: Israel is winning, so the opposition organizes. The nations that couldn't cooperate under normal circumstances find common cause in their shared fear of what God is doing through Israel. Your success produces their unity. Your effectiveness creates their coordination.

The comprehensive geography means there's nowhere in the land that isn't organizing against Israel. Hills, valleys, and coastlands—every kind of terrain, every region, every nation. The resistance isn't localized. It's universal. The entire land is uniting against the people God is bringing into it. The welcome mat has been replaced with a coalition agreement.

This pattern repeats wherever God's people advance: the more effective you are, the more organized the opposition becomes. Success doesn't reduce resistance. It coordinates it. The enemies who fought each other before now fight you together. The opposition that was scattered before is now unified—not because they've found common values but because they've found a common threat: the God working through you. Don't be surprised when your effectiveness produces organized resistance. It's the enemy's compliment to your impact.
