Luke 2:26

Luke 2:26
And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

My Notes

What Does Luke 2:26 Mean?

The Holy Spirit reveals something to Simeon: he won't die before he sees the Lord's Christ. The promise is specific (you'll see the Messiah), personal (you, Simeon), and Spirit-delivered (revealed by the Holy Ghost). The old man's death is postponed by a divine appointment with a baby.

The phrase "revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost" means the knowledge came through supernatural communication. Not Scripture study alone (though Simeon was clearly devout). Not theological reasoning. Direct revelation. The Spirit told Simeon: you'll see Him before you die. The promise was person-to-person.

"Should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ" — the two "seeings" are connected: seeing the Christ prevents seeing death. As long as the first seeing hasn't happened, the second can't occur. Simeon's death is held in suspension by the unfulfilled promise. He's alive because the Messiah hasn't arrived yet. And when the Messiah arrives, the death is released.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Is there a promise from God that's sustaining you — a 'seeing' you're waiting for that holds you in place?
  • 2.Does Simeon's willingness to die after the fulfillment ('now let me depart') describe the completeness that comes when a life's purpose is met?
  • 3.How does the Spirit's personal revelation (specific to Simeon, not a general promise) model how God speaks into individual lives?
  • 4.Have you had a 'Simeon moment' — a fulfillment so complete you could say 'now I can go'?

Devotional

The Holy Spirit told Simeon: you won't die until you see the Messiah. One promise. Holding back death.

Simeon is old. Devout. Waiting for the consolation of Israel (verse 25). He's been watching for the Messiah his entire life. And the Holy Spirit gives him a personal revelation: you'll see Him. Before you die. The promise is specific, personal, and Spirit-delivered. You. The Christ. Before death.

"Revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost" — this isn't theology. It's direct communication. The Spirit speaks to Simeon personally: I'm making you a promise. You will see the Lord's Christ. Not in the age to come. In this life. With your own eyes. Before you die.

The promise creates a paradox: Simeon can't die until he sees the Messiah. His death is held in suspension by an unfulfilled appointment. Every morning he wakes up is evidence that the Messiah hasn't come yet — and that the promise is still active. His continued existence is the proof that the meeting hasn't happened.

And then: Luke 2:27-28. Simeon walks into the temple. The Spirit leads him there. Mary and Joseph walk in with a baby. And Simeon takes the baby in his arms and says: now. Now I can die. "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace" (verse 29). The promise is fulfilled. The seeing has happened. And the death that was held back is released.

The promise sustained a man's life until the moment it was fulfilled. Then the life was complete. The seeing that was promised became the seeing that released. The baby in Simeon's arms was the thing death had been waiting for.

Some promises hold back death. Some appointments are worth an entire lifetime of waiting. And some babies, when you hold them, let you say: now I can go.

The Spirit that made the promise fulfilled the promise. In a temple. With a baby. And Simeon died the most complete death anyone can die: the death of someone whose promise was kept.
