My Notes
What Does Matthew 12:22 Mean?
"Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw." This man carries three afflictions layered on top of each other — demonic possession, blindness, and muteness. He can't see, can't speak, and is controlled by a force not his own. He doesn't come to Jesus himself; he's brought. He can't advocate for himself. He is entirely dependent on others to bring him to the one who can help.
Jesus heals everything at once. Not a partial restoration, not a staged recovery — complete healing. The man who couldn't see now sees. The man who couldn't speak now speaks. The oppression lifts. Matthew presents this as a single, comprehensive act of liberation, demonstrating Jesus' total authority over physical, sensory, and spiritual bondage.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Who in your life might need you to 'bring them' to Jesus because they can't get there on their own?
- 2.Have you ever been the one who was brought — too blind or too silenced to seek help yourself?
- 3.Why is it significant that Jesus healed everything at once rather than in stages?
- 4.What barriers (blindness, silence, oppression) are currently preventing you from bringing your full self to God?
Devotional
This man couldn't come to Jesus on his own. He was blind — he couldn't find the way. He was mute — he couldn't ask for help. He was possessed — he wasn't fully in control of his own will. He had every barrier imaginable between him and Jesus. And yet he got there, because someone brought him.
There's a profound picture of community here. Some people in your life cannot get to Jesus on their own. Not because they don't need him, but because their blindness, their silence, their bondage makes it impossible for them to initiate. They need someone to take their hand and bring them.
And there's a picture of your own story too. There have been seasons — maybe you're in one now — where you couldn't see clearly, couldn't articulate what you needed, couldn't even fully understand what had hold of you. And someone brought you. Someone prayed. Someone showed up. Someone refused to let your inability become your destiny.
Notice that Jesus healed everything. Not just the blindness, not just the muteness, not just the possession — all of it. When you bring your whole broken self to Jesus, he doesn't do partial work. He doesn't fix the presentable problems and leave the deep ones untouched. He heals the blind and dumb both.
