Matthew 16:27

Matthew 16:27
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

My Notes

What Does Matthew 16:27 Mean?

Jesus describes his own return: the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he shall reward every man according to his works. The return is glorious, attended, and evaluative.

The glory is the Father's — shared with the Son. Jesus comes not in his own glory alone but in the Father's glory, indicating the full weight of divine majesty.

The angels accompany him — the full host of heaven in attendance. The return is not private or subtle. It is cosmic, visible, and attended by every heavenly being.

"Reward every man according to his works" establishes the basis of evaluation: works. Not claims, not feelings, not affiliations. What you did. The reward is proportional to the action — not earning salvation but revealing the nature of the life lived.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does 'reward according to works' fit with salvation by grace?
  • 2.What does the scale of the return — Father's glory, angelic host — suggest about its significance?
  • 3.What works in your life would stand as evidence of genuine faith?
  • 4.How does the certainty of evaluation change how you live today?

Devotional

The Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels. The return of Jesus is described with maximum scale: the Father's glory, the angelic host, and a judgment that evaluates every person.

Then shall he reward every man according to his works. The reward is based on what you did — not what you said, not what you believed intellectually, not what church you attended. What you did. Your works are the evidence.

This does not contradict salvation by grace. Grace saves. Works reveal. The judgment examines the fruit to determine what kind of tree you were. The works do not earn the reward. They demonstrate the reality — or absence — of genuine faith.

In the glory of his Father. The return is not a quiet visit. It is the full manifestation of divine glory — the weight of God's presence visible to every eye. What has been hidden will be revealed. What has been whispered will be shouted.

With his angels. The entire angelic army in formation. The most powerful created beings in the universe, accompanying the return of the one they serve.

The evaluation is coming. Not to condemn the faithful but to reward them. According to your works — the tangible evidence of a faith that was real.

What will your works say about you when the glory arrives?
