My Notes
What Does Revelation 22:12 Mean?
These are among the last words of Jesus in Scripture — and they combine urgency, reward, and justice. "And, behold, I come quickly" — behold (idou) demands attention. Quickly (tachu) means suddenly, without delay, at speed. The emphasis isn't on chronological nearness but on the manner of arrival: when Jesus comes, it will be sudden. No warning period. No gradual approach. Quick.
"And my reward is with me" — Jesus doesn't arrive empty-handed. He brings (meta) the reward. The word "reward" (misthos) means wages, compensation, what is owed. Jesus is coming as a paymaster — carrying what each person has earned. The reward travels with Him. It's not waiting at the destination. It's in His hands on the way.
"To give every man according as his work shall be" — the distribution is individual (hekasto — to each one) and proportional (hos to ergon — according to the work). The reward matches the labor. Not every believer receives the same reward. The work determines the wages. This isn't salvation by works — that's settled by grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). This is rewards for faithfulness — the crowns, the commendations, the "well done" that varies based on what you did with what you were given.
The verse holds together grace and accountability. Salvation is free. Rewards are earned. Jesus comes quickly, carrying both: the salvation that covers and the reward that corresponds.
Reflection Questions
- 1.If Jesus arrived today with your reward already determined, what would the paycheck look like based on your current faithfulness?
- 2.Jesus comes 'quickly' — suddenly. Are you living ready, or are you counting on more time to get serious?
- 3.Salvation is free but rewards are proportional. How does the distinction between the two change your motivation for daily faithfulness?
- 4.Your 'work' is being evaluated now. What work are you doing — or not doing — that will matter when the reward is distributed?
Devotional
Jesus is coming. And He's bringing your paycheck with Him.
The last words of Christ in Revelation are a warning and a promise braided together. I come quickly — so be ready. My reward is with me — so your labor matters. To give every man according to his work — so what you did counted.
"I come quickly." Not slowly. Not with a long runway of signs that give you time to prepare at the last minute. Quickly — suddenly, decisively, without the luxury of last-minute course corrections. The quickness is the argument for living ready now. If you knew He was coming this afternoon, you'd live differently. Jesus says: live that way.
"My reward is with me." Jesus isn't arriving to evaluate you on the spot. He's arriving with the evaluation already completed and the reward already in hand. The decision about your reward has been made by the time He shows up. Your current life is the period in which the reward is being determined. When He arrives, the paycheck is already written.
"According as his work shall be." This is the verse that prevents cheap grace from becoming lazy grace. Salvation is free — you can't earn it. But rewards are proportional — they correspond to what you did with the grace you were given. The person who was faithful with much receives much. The person who buried their talent receives less. The work isn't the basis of salvation. It's the basis of reward. And the distinction matters because it means your daily choices have eternal weight.
You're living right now in the gap between the promise and the arrival. And what you do in this gap determines what's in the envelope when Jesus hands it to you. He's coming quickly. The reward is already in His hand. And it has your name on it.
