Matthew 24:27

Matthew 24:27
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

My Notes

What Does Matthew 24:27 Mean?

"For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." Jesus describes his return with the simplest and most unmistakable natural phenomenon: lightning. From east to west, horizon to horizon, instantaneous and visible to everyone. No one misses lightning. No one needs to be told it happened. No one debates whether they saw it. The return of Christ will have that quality: universal visibility, instantaneous occurrence, zero ambiguity.

The comparison eliminates every false version of the second coming: anyone who says "Christ is here" or "Christ is there" (v. 23-26) is lying. Because when Jesus actually returns, it won't require announcement. Lightning doesn't need a press conference.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does the lightning comparison eliminate anxiety about 'missing' the second coming?
  • 2.What false claims about Christ's return does this verse specifically debunk?
  • 3.What does the universality of lightning (everyone sees it simultaneously) teach about the nature of Christ's return?
  • 4.How does the certainty of a 'lightning' return produce both comfort and urgency?

Devotional

Lightning. East to west. Instant. Visible. Undeniable. That's the second coming. Not hidden. Not gradual. Not requiring someone to point it out. As obvious as a sky split by lightning from one horizon to the other.

Jesus chooses the one natural phenomenon that's impossible to miss and impossible to fake. You can fake a miracle. You can claim a private revelation. You can say 'the Messiah is in the desert' or 'the Messiah is in the inner rooms' (v. 26). But you can't fake lightning across the entire sky. And you can't miss it. Every eye sees it simultaneously. Nobody needs to tell you it happened.

So shall the coming of the Son of man be. The return of Christ won't need a marketing campaign. Won't need a prophet to announce 'he's over there.' Won't require investigation to verify. It'll be as obvious as the sky lighting up from east to west — visible to every eye, on every continent, in every time zone, at the same moment. The universality and instantaneity are the guarantees against deception.

This means every claim of Christ's secret return is false. Every group that says 'he came back and only we know about it' is lying. Every teacher who says 'the second coming already happened but you missed it' is wrong. Because lightning doesn't come secretly. Lightning doesn't require insider knowledge. Lightning is the most public event the sky produces.

The simplicity of the comparison is the assurance: you won't miss it. You won't need to be told. You won't need someone to explain it to you. When Christ returns, the explanation will be the event itself — as self-evident as lightning, as unmistakable as sunrise, as universal as the sky.

Stop looking for secret returns. Start waiting for the lightning.
