“Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:”
My Notes
What Does Matthew 25:34 Mean?
Jesus describes the final judgment scene where the King separates the righteous from the unrighteous. To those on his right hand, the invitation is extraordinary: come, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
"Come, ye blessed of my Father" — the welcome is personal, warm, and paternal. The Father's blessing rests on these people. They are not just permitted into the kingdom. They are invited with affection.
"Inherit" means receive as a birthright — not earn, not purchase, but inherit. The kingdom was not their achievement. It was their inheritance, prepared by someone else.
"Prepared for you from the foundation of the world" pushes the preparation back to before creation. Before you existed, before the world was formed, a place was being prepared for you. Your inheritance was settled before time began.
The criteria for this inheritance, revealed in the following verses, is startlingly practical: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the imprisoned. The kingdom is inherited by those who served the least.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean that the kingdom was prepared for you 'from the foundation of the world'?
- 2.How does the criteria for inheritance — feeding, clothing, visiting — challenge typical religious performance?
- 3.What does the word 'come' reveal about God's posture toward you?
- 4.Where are you encountering 'the least of these' in your daily life — and how are you responding?
Devotional
Come. That single word from the King's mouth is the most beautiful invitation in Scripture. Not earn your way. Not prove yourself worthy. Come.
Ye blessed of my Father. You are blessed. Not because of your performance. Because the Father's blessing rests on you. The welcome comes from above.
Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Before you were born. Before the earth was formed. Before time started ticking. A kingdom was being prepared — with your name on it.
That means you are not an afterthought. You are not scrambling for a seat. The seat was set aside before the table was built. From the foundation of the world — that is how long ago God decided you would be welcome.
And the criteria? Feeding the hungry. Visiting the sick. Clothing the naked. The kingdom is not inherited by the theologically impressive. It is inherited by those who saw need and responded. Who met Jesus in the faces of the least and served him there.
The kingdom was prepared for you. Are you living like you know that?
