Nehemiah 6:1

Nehemiah 6:1
Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)

My Notes

What Does Nehemiah 6:1 Mean?

"Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)" The wall is complete — no breaches remain — but the gates are still unfinished. The enemies hear about the progress and escalate their opposition. The near-completion doesn't end the resistance. It intensifies it.

The three named adversaries — Sanballat (Horonite governor), Tobiah (Ammonite official), and Geshem (Arabian leader) — represent a coalition of surrounding powers opposed to Jerusalem's restoration. The opposition is organized, multi-ethnic, and persistent. The enemies come from different directions but share a common agenda: prevent the wall's completion.

The parenthetical — "though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates" — reveals the vulnerability of near-completion: the wall stands but the gates are still open. The structure is built but the entry points are unprotected. The enemies know that the final phase — hanging the doors — is the critical moment.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What project is in its final stretch — and what opposition is targeting that near-completion?
  • 2.Why does opposition intensify at near-completion rather than at the beginning?
  • 3.What does the 'wall without doors' — structure without security — represent in your life?
  • 4.How does a coalition of different enemies uniting against your progress reflect the nature of spiritual opposition?

Devotional

The wall is up. No breaches. But the doors aren't hung yet — and the enemies hear about it. The opposition intensifies precisely at the moment of near-completion. Not when the work started. Not at the halfway point. At the almost-finished point. The enemies know that the most dangerous moment for any project is the final stretch.

Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem — a coalition from three different directions, three different peoples, three different political interests — share one agenda: stop the wall. The opposition is organized and collaborative. The enemies who disagree about everything else agree about this: Jerusalem must not be restored. The wall must not be completed.

The parenthetical about the doors is Nehemiah's honest vulnerability: the wall has no breaches, but it also has no gates. The structure is complete but the access points are unprotected. It's the architecture of almost — the wall says 'we're strong' while the open gates say 'we're not finished.' The enemies target the gap between almost-done and done.

This verse captures the near-completion pattern: the last 5% attracts the most opposition. The enemies who watched passively during the early construction mobilize when they see the wall nearing completion. The threat isn't the building. The threat is the finished building. What scares the adversary isn't your progress — it's your completion.

What project in your life is at the 'wall complete but doors not hung' stage — and what opposition is targeting that final stretch?
