My Notes
What Does Numbers 10:12 Mean?
"And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran." Israel LEAVES Sinai and the cloud rests in PARAN — the vast wilderness between Sinai and the Promised Land. The journey FROM Sinai goes TO Paran — from the mountain of LAW to the wilderness of TESTING. The departure from the receiving-place leads to the proving-place. The classroom is left. The exam-room is entered. The cloud that led FROM Sinai leads TO the desert where every lesson will be TESTED.
The phrase "took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai" (vayyis'u miMidbar Sinai — they journeyed/pulled up from the wilderness of Sinai) uses the DEPARTURE verb (nasa — to pull up stakes, to break camp, to set out): Israel PULLS UP — the tent-pegs come out, the camp is disassembled, the year-long settlement is DISMANTLED. The pulling-up is the LEAVING. The departing is the obeying. The cloud lifted (verse 11). Israel follows.
The "the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran" (vayyishkon he'anan beMidbar Pa'ran — the cloud settled/dwelt in the wilderness of Paran) marks the FIRST STOP: Paran — the large wilderness in the Sinai Peninsula's northeast, between Sinai and Canaan. The cloud RESTS (shakan — dwells, settles, takes up residence) in Paran. The same verb used for God's presence DWELLING in the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:8) is used for the cloud RESTING in the wilderness. The divine presence SETTLES in the desert. The dwelling-place is now the wildness.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What testing-wilderness is the cloud leading you into?
- 2.What does the cloud DWELLING (not just passing through) in the desert teach about God's presence in your testing?
- 3.How does the transition from Sinai (receiving) to Paran (testing) describe the journey of faith?
- 4.What lessons received at your 'Sinai' are about to be tested in your 'Paran'?
Devotional
They left Sinai. The cloud settled in Paran. From the mountain of LAW to the wilderness of TESTING. From the classroom to the exam. The departure from the receiving-place leads to the proving-place. The cloud that sat on Sinai for a year now settles in the desert where every lesson will be tested.
The 'took their journeys' (vayyis'u — they pulled up) is the DEPARTURE action: the tent-pegs come out. The camp is struck. The year-long settlement at Sinai is DISMANTLED. The leaving is as physical as the arriving was. The pulling-up is the obedience to the lifted cloud. The departure isn't reluctant. It's RESPONSIVE — the cloud moved, Israel follows.
The 'wilderness of Paran' is the TESTING GROUND: Paran is where the twelve spies will be sent (13:3). Paran is where Israel will refuse to enter the Promised Land (14:1-4). Paran is where the forty-year wandering will be centered. The wilderness that the cloud leads Israel INTO is the wilderness where EVERYTHING will be tested — faith, obedience, patience, courage. The cloud doesn't lead to COMFORT. It leads to TESTING.
The 'cloud rested' (vayyishkon) uses the DWELLING verb: the same shakan that describes God DWELLING in the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:8) describes the cloud SETTLING in the wilderness. The divine presence doesn't just PASS THROUGH the desert. It DWELLS there. The wilderness that will test Israel is the wilderness where God's presence RESIDES. The testing-ground is the dwelling-place. The desert where faith is tried is the desert where God lives.
What 'Paran' — what testing-wilderness — is the cloud leading you into? And is God's presence settling there WITH you?
