“A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.”
My Notes
What Does Proverbs 14:6 Mean?
"A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth." The scorner searches for wisdom but can't find it — not because wisdom is hidden but because the scorner's attitude prevents discovery. The person who understands, by contrast, finds knowledge EASY — readily accessible, naturally available. The obstacle to wisdom isn't scarcity. It's scorn.
The phrase "seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not" (biqqesh chokmah ve'ayin — he sought wisdom and there is none) describes a frustrating futility: the scorner genuinely looks for wisdom. The seeking is real. But the finding never happens. Wisdom is there — but it's invisible to the scorner. The contemptuous eye can look right at wisdom and see nothing. The attitude blocks the perception.
The "knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth" (lenavon da'at naqal — to the discerning, knowledge is light/easy) means comprehension comes naturally to the humble: the understanding person finds knowledge effortless because their posture is receptive. They're not blocking the input with contempt. They're open. The knowledge flows in because nothing is blocking the channel.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Are you seeking wisdom with an open posture — or is hidden scorn blocking your discovery?
- 2.What does a scorner seeking but not finding teach about attitude being the obstacle, not availability?
- 3.How does knowledge being 'easy' for the understanding person challenge the idea that wisdom is inherently hard to find?
- 4.What contempt or assumed superiority might be filtering out the wisdom you're searching for?
Devotional
The scorner seeks wisdom and can't find it. The understanding person finds knowledge easy. Same world. Same information available. Different results — because the difference isn't in the supply. It's in the seeker.
The scorner's problem isn't effort: they genuinely SEEK wisdom. They want it. They look for it. But they bring the wrong attitude to the search. The scorn — the contempt, the mockery, the assumption that they already know better — functions like a filter that blocks the very thing they're looking for. Wisdom is right there. The scorner's eyes can't see it because scorn has blinded them.
The 'knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth' reveals the secret: it's not that knowledge is inherently difficult. It's that the SCORNER makes it difficult. For the person with understanding — the humble, the teachable, the person who approaches without contempt — knowledge comes easily. It flows naturally. It's accessible without struggle. The ease isn't about intelligence. It's about posture.
The proverb diagnoses the most frustrating spiritual condition: seeking wisdom and not finding it. If that's you — if you're genuinely looking for answers and they won't come — check your posture. Are you approaching with understanding (openness, humility, teachability) or with scorn (contempt, mockery, assumed superiority)? The supply of wisdom hasn't changed. Your reception of it might need to.
Are you seeking wisdom with understanding — or with scorn that blocks the very thing you're looking for?
