My Notes
What Does Proverbs 22:14 Mean?
"The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein." The proverb warns that the seductive speech of the adulterous woman functions as a trap — specifically, a deep pit from which extraction is difficult or impossible. The danger isn't the woman herself but her mouth — her words, her persuasion, her verbal seduction.
The phrase "deep pit" (shuchah amaqah) describes a hunting pit — a concealed hole dug to trap animals. The animal doesn't see it until it's falling. The parallel is clear: the words of seduction don't look like a pit from above. They look like an invitation, a compliment, an opportunity. The trap is invisible until you're in it.
The theological addition — "he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein" — adds a sobering dimension. Falling into this particular trap isn't just foolishness; it's described as divine judgment. The person God is displeased with is the one who falls. The trap functions as consequence, not just coincidence.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Have you recognized how verbal seduction — words, attention, emotional intimacy — precedes physical temptation?
- 2.What conversations might be building a hidden pit underneath you?
- 3.How does understanding that the 'mouth' is the trap change how you guard yourself?
- 4.What does it mean that falling into this trap is connected to God's displeasure?
Devotional
The words are the trap. Not the appearance, not the circumstance — the words. The mouth of seduction is described as a deep pit because it's the words that pull you in. The conversation, the flattery, the way she makes you feel understood and seen and wanted — that's the pit.
This proverb is brutally honest about how sexual temptation actually works. It doesn't usually start with physical contact. It starts with conversation. Words that make you feel things your regular life doesn't. Words that describe you the way you wish someone else would. Words that create emotional intimacy before physical intimacy. The mouth is the pit.
The pit is deep and hidden. You don't see it while you're walking toward it. The conversation seems innocent. The attention seems harmless. The words seem friendly. But they're architecture — they're building a pit underneath you that you won't notice until you're falling.
The theological dimension — God's displeasure connecting to the fall — isn't God pushing people into traps. It's God withdrawing protection from those who have persistently ignored His warnings. After enough refusal to listen, God allows consequences to function. The pit was always there. God's warning was always available. The fall happens when the warnings have been exhausted.
What conversations are you having that might be building a pit you can't see yet?
