“They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 115:8 Mean?
The psalmist declares a devastating principle: you become like what you worship. "They that make them are like unto them"—the idol-makers become as lifeless and senseless as the idols they create. Eyes that don't see, ears that don't hear, mouths that don't speak (described in the preceding verses)—these qualities transfer from the idol to the worshiper.
The extension—"so is every one that trusteth in them"—broadens the principle beyond the craftsman to anyone who places their trust in something lifeless. You don't have to carve the idol to be shaped by it. Simply trusting in it is enough to begin the transformation. What you worship, you become.
This is one of the most psychologically accurate observations in Scripture. Human beings are fundamentally shaped by what they give their attention, devotion, and trust to. Worship isn't just a religious category—it's a formative one. The object of your deepest trust molds you into its image, for better or for worse.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What are you becoming? And what does that reveal about what you're actually worshiping?
- 2.What functional 'idols' in your life—money, approval, control, comfort—are shaping you in ways you might not have noticed?
- 3.If worship is formation—if you become like what you worship—what would you look like if you worshiped God more consistently?
- 4.How do you redirect your deepest attention and trust toward God when other things keep competing for that space?
Devotional
You become what you worship. That's the warning of this verse, and it's as true now as it was when silver idols sat on pedestals in ancient temples. The idol-makers became like their idols—lifeless, senseless, unable to see or hear or respond. And everyone who trusted in those idols did too.
You might not carve silver statues, but you worship something. Whatever gets your deepest attention, your highest devotion, your most consistent trust—that's your functional god. And this verse says you're becoming like it. If you worship money, you become transactional. If you worship approval, you become a mirror—reflecting whatever gets the best response. If you worship control, you become rigid and anxious. If you worship comfort, you become numb.
The reverse is the gospel's promise: if you worship the living God—the one with eyes that see, ears that hear, a mouth that speaks, hands that act—you become like Him. Worship is formation. It's the most powerful shaping force in your life, far more powerful than your intentions, your habits, or your willpower. What you worship determines what you become.
Look at your life honestly. What are you becoming? Trace it backward. The thing you're becoming will point you to the thing you're worshiping. If you don't like what you see, the answer isn't to try harder. It's to change what you worship.
