What Does Psalms 119:144 Mean?
"The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live." The psalmist declares the eternal nature of God's testimonies — their righteousness never expires — and then asks for understanding as the condition for life itself. The understanding and the living are connected: understand the eternal testimonies, and you LIVE. The comprehension produces the vitality.
The phrase "righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting" (tsedeq edoteka le'olam — the righteousness of Your witnesses/testimonies forever) means the moral quality of God's word doesn't degrade: the testimonies aren't righteous for a season and then outdated. They're righteous FOREVER. The standard doesn't shift. The truth doesn't expire. What God testified is righteous today, tomorrow, and eternally.
The request — "give me understanding, and I shall live" (havineni ve'echeyeh — cause me to understand and I will live) — makes understanding the gateway to life: without understanding, there's no living.
