Psalms 135:9

Psalms 135:9
Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 135:9 Mean?

"Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants." God SENT — actively dispatched, deliberately deployed — tokens (otot — signs) and wonders (mophetim — portents, miracles) INTO Egypt. The location is SPECIFIC: into the MIDST of Egypt. The targets are SPECIFIC: upon Pharaoh AND upon all his servants. The sending is TARGETED — not random miracles but aimed signs, directed at specific people in a specific place.

The phrase "sent tokens and wonders" (shalach otot umophetim — He sent signs and portents) uses SHALACH — to send, to dispatch, to deploy. The signs and wonders are SENT like messengers — dispatched on mission, carrying purpose, aimed at destination. The miracles aren't explosions of divine energy. They're COMMUNICATIONS — signs that signify, wonders that mean something. The sending is INTENTIONAL.

The phrase "into the midst of thee, O Egypt" (betokhekhiy Mitzrayim — in your midst, Egypt) ADDRESSES Egypt directly: the psalm speaks TO Egypt — making the historical nation a living addressee. The 'in your midst' places the miracles at the CENTER — not at Egypt's borders but in the HEART of the nation. The signs penetrated to the CORE. The wonders reached the INTERIOR.

The phrase "upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants" specifies the RECIPIENTS: not just the nation but the LEADER and his ADMINISTRATION. The signs targeted the POWER STRUCTURE — the king AND his staff. The miracles weren't aimed at the general population primarily. They were aimed at the LEADERSHIP — the decision-makers, the power-holders, the ones who needed to be convinced or broken.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What signs is God sending into the midst of a situation — and are the decision-makers receiving them?
  • 2.What does signs being SENT (dispatched, aimed) teach about miracles as intentional communication?
  • 3.How does targeting PHARAOH and his servants describe God communicating directly with power-structures?
  • 4.What 'midst' — what center of your circumstances — has God penetrated with His signs?

Devotional

God SENT signs and wonders INTO THE MIDST of Egypt — not to the borders, not to the outskirts, but to the CENTER. The miracles penetrated to the HEART of the empire. And they targeted PHARAOH and ALL his servants — the leadership, the administration, the power-structure. The signs were aimed at the decision-makers.

The 'SENT' makes the miracles DISPATCHED: not accidents of nature but deliberately deployed divine communications. God sent them like messages — aimed, purposed, targeted. Each sign carried MEANING. Each wonder carried a MESSAGE. The plagues weren't random. They were CORRESPONDENCE — God writing to Pharaoh in a language of power.

The 'INTO THE MIDST' is the penetration: the signs didn't hover at Egypt's edges. They went IN — into the center, into the heart, into the core of the civilization. The miracles were INVASIVE — entering the nation at its deepest point, reaching the most interior spaces of the empire. The signs penetrated where armies couldn't.

The 'PHARAOH AND ALL HIS SERVANTS' targeting is strategic: the miracles aimed at the LEADERSHIP — the king and his administration. The signs were designed for the people with the POWER to respond. The targeting says: God communicates with the powerful. The signs are aimed at decision-makers. The wonders are directed at the people who can say YES or NO.

What signs is God sending INTO THE MIDST of your 'Egypt' — and are the right people receiving them?
