Psalms 136:23

Psalms 136:23
Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever:

My Notes

What Does Psalms 136:23 Mean?

"Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever." God remembered — actively recalled, intentionally noticed — His people when they were at their lowest. The remembering isn't passive memory. It's divine attention directed toward the humiliated. God looked at the low estate and chose to act. The low estate didn't repel God's attention. It attracted it.

The phrase "low estate" (shiflenu — our lowness, our humiliation, our debasement) describes the worst condition: not just difficulty but degradation. The 'low' is social, spiritual, and existential — brought down, humiliated, reduced to nothing. The estate is the condition, the state of being. The people were in a STATE of lowness. It wasn't a temporary dip. It was their condition.

The "remembered" (shezakaranu — He remembered us) is covenantal language: God remembers His covenant, His promises, His people. The remembering produces action — God doesn't just recall the information. He responds to it. The remembering IS the first act of rescue. When God remembers, deliverance begins.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What low estate are you in — and do you believe God remembers you there?
  • 2.How does God 'remembering' being an act (not just recall) change what it means for God to remember you?
  • 3.What does the low estate attracting rather than repelling God's attention teach about divine mercy?
  • 4.What past 'low estate' did God remember you in — and what did the remembering produce?

Devotional

He remembered us. In our LOW estate. Not in our high moments. Not in our victories. In our lowness — our humiliation, our debasement, our reduced-to-nothing state. THAT'S when God remembered. The low estate didn't make God look away. It made God look toward.

The 'remembered us' is more than mental recall: in Hebrew, God remembering means God ACTING. When God 'remembered Noah' (Genesis 8:1), the flood receded. When God 'remembered Rachel' (Genesis 30:22), she conceived. When God 'remembered His covenant' (Exodus 2:24), the Exodus began. The remembering IS the intervention. The recall triggers the rescue.

The 'low estate' is the condition that qualifies you for remembering: you don't need to be impressive for God to remember you. You don't need to be at your best. You need to be at your LOWEST. The low estate — the humiliation, the debasement, the place where nothing works and no one cares — is exactly where God's attention goes. The mercy that endures forever endures specifically into the lowest places.

The 'for his mercy endureth for ever' tagged to THIS act is especially meaningful: God's mercy reaches into the low estate BECAUSE it endures forever. A mercy that expired would stop before reaching the bottom. A mercy that ran out would abandon the lowest. But mercy that endures FOREVER reaches all the way down to the lowest estate — and stays.

What low estate are you in — and do you believe God remembers you there?
