My Notes
What Does Psalms 145:20 Mean?
"The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy." The BINARY — stated with absolute clarity: God PRESERVES all who love Him AND DESTROYS all the wicked. The two outcomes are OPPOSITE. The two groups are DISTINCT. The dividing line is LOVE: those who love God receive preservation. Those who are wicked receive destruction. The middle ground doesn't exist.
The phrase "the LORD preserveth all them that love him" (shomer YHWH et kol ohavav — the LORD guards/keeps all who love Him) uses SHAMAR — to guard, to keep, to watch over, to protect. The preservation is ACTIVE GUARDING — not just allowing to survive but WATCHING OVER, protecting, maintaining. The guarding is for ALL who love Him (kol ohavav — all His lovers). The condition is LOVE. The response is KEEPING.
The phrase "all the wicked will he destroy" (ve'et kol haresha'im yashmid — all the wicked He will exterminate/destroy) uses SHAMAD — to destroy, to exterminate, to annihilate. The destruction is TOTAL — not discipline, not correction, not temporary punishment, but ANNIHILATION. The verb is used for NATIONAL destruction (Deuteronomy 9:3 — 'he shall destroy them'). The wicked face the same verb applied to the Canaanites.
The BINARY is the theological CLARITY: no ambiguity. No middle category. Lovers of God are PRESERVED. The wicked are DESTROYED. The psalm presents the universe as a TWO-OUTCOME system — with LOVE as the dividing criterion. The love determines the outcome. The heart-posture determines the destiny.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Do you love God — and is that love the basis of your confidence in preservation?
- 2.What does the dividing line being LOVE (not performance) teach about what God values most?
- 3.How does PRESERVATION (active guarding) describe God's ongoing protection of those who love Him?
- 4.What does the BINARY (no middle ground) demand of your heart-posture toward God?
Devotional
PRESERVED — all who love Him. DESTROYED — all the wicked. The binary is absolute: two groups, two outcomes, one dividing line. The dividing line is LOVE — not performance, not perfection, not theological precision, but LOVE. Do you love God? Preserved. Are you wicked? Destroyed. The simplicity is the clarity.
The LOVE condition is the surprise: the criterion isn't obedience, righteousness, or sacrifice. It's LOVE. The ohavim (lovers) of God are the ones who receive preservation. The HEART-ORIENTATION determines the outcome. The relationship-quality determines the destiny. The love isn't perfect behavior. It's directional DEVOTION — the heart aimed at God, the affection directed toward the divine.
The PRESERVATION (shamar — guard, keep, watch over) is ACTIVE: God doesn't just allow the lovers to survive. He GUARDS them — actively, personally, continuously. The keeping is the same verb used for Adam's mandate in Eden ('to keep the garden' — Genesis 2:15). God KEEPS His lovers the way Adam was supposed to keep Eden. The preservation is tending, watching, protecting.
The DESTRUCTION (shamad — exterminate) is TOTAL: not correction that leads to improvement. Not discipline that leads to growth. EXTERMINATION — the end of the wicked's existence. The verb doesn't leave room for rehabilitation. The destruction is the consequence that exhausted patience produces. The preservation and the destruction are equally COMPLETE — the keeping is total and the ending is total.
Do you LOVE God — and is that love the ground of your preservation?
