“They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 17:10 Mean?
David describes his enemies with physical imagery: "inclosed in their own fat" — wrapped in self-satisfaction, cushioned by prosperity, insulated from others' pain. And from that insulated position, "with their mouth they speak proudly." The fat and the pride are connected: the cushion produces the arrogance.
The word "inclosed" (sagar — shut up, closed) means sealed inside their own prosperity. The fat isn't just physical abundance. It's a barrier — a layer between the wealthy person and reality. They've surrounded themselves with enough comfort that nothing from outside can reach them. The pain of others is sealed out by their own satisfaction.
"Speak proudly" — the mouth follows the condition. When you're enclosed in prosperity, your speech becomes arrogant. The words that emerge from a cushioned life are words of superiority. The fat produces the pride because the fat removes the need for humility.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Is your prosperity creating a barrier between you and other people's reality — 'enclosing' you in comfort?
- 2.Does the connection between fat (abundance) and proud speech describe a pattern you recognize?
- 3.How do you stay empathetic when everything in your life is comfortable?
- 4.What 'fat' needs to be broken open so that the reality of others' pain can reach you?
Devotional
Enclosed in their own fat. And from that cushioned position — proud speech.
David sees his enemies and identifies the connection between their prosperity and their arrogance: they're wrapped in abundance. Sealed inside comfort. So thoroughly insulated by success that nothing from the outside world — no one else's pain, no perspective besides their own, no reality check — can penetrate.
And from inside that fat, the speech is proud. Because when you've never been hungry, you can't imagine hunger. When you've never been vulnerable, you mock vulnerability. When you're enclosed in your own satisfaction, the only language you know is superiority.
The fat is the barrier. Not the food — the insulation. The layer of comfort that separates you from empathy. The prosperity that seals you off from understanding what it's like to be without. Every dollar of excess is another millimeter of distance between you and the person who has nothing.
"Speak proudly" — the mouth reveals the condition. Jesus said "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh" (Matthew 12:34). The enclosed heart produces the proud mouth. The words aren't the problem. They're the symptom. The fat is the disease. The proud speech is just the fever.
Are you enclosed? Not just wealthy — sealed. So comfortable that no one else's reality reaches you. So satisfied that empathy has been crowded out by abundance. The test isn't your bank account. It's your speech. If your words are proud, your comfort might be the cause.
The fat that feels like blessing can become the barrier that produces blindness.
